Students explore a range of key concepts, theories, and controversies in the anthropology of ethnicity, culture, nationhood, and identity. Drawing on case studies from within and beyond Britain, it encourages students to consider how identities are created, deployed, and contested; how they are embedded in broader social, political, religious, and economic contexts; and how an anthropological perspective can illuminate contemporary debates on race, ethnicity, nationalism, and multiculturalism.

Course Description
The first term gives students an overview of the trajectory of European integration, of the main institutions of the EU, and of theories that help with the interpretation of the successive steps in European integration as well as policy-making in the EU. In the second term, students examine some of the most highly contested debates about European integration, including debates over EU enlargement, democratic legitimacy, or UK membership. Frequent reference is made to current EU affairs, as reported in the UK media, equipping students with the skills to follow these news, and challenge the ideologically charged way in which EU affairs are often reported in the media.
