Course Description
This course outlines field methods in archaeology through practical experience and theoretical investigation. It covers theoretical underpinnings for the field methods employed and the legislative framework for archaeological practice in New Zealand and globally. It requires students to engage with literature on key issues in New Zealand archaeology and methodological debate relevant to your case study. Students use the Ahuahu Great Mercury Island archaeological project as the data set for their case studies. The assessment for the course is designed to reflect the research process of archaeology. Students submit a final piece of writing as though they would submit it to a peer-reviewed academic journal and present it at a conference.

Course Description

This course focuses on the history and culture of the Africans in the diaspora on the African continent (especially West Africa) and the Americas (North America, the Caribbean, and South America). The course examines major issues and conditions in Africa that sent many people into diaspora communities in Africa. Specific issues considered in this direction are those related to Islamic Jihads, Trans-Saharan Trade, Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, Colonialism, and plantation slavery in West Africa, as these events led to the relocation and redistribution of African populations in Africa. Additionally, the course reviews archaeological evidence that provides insights into the historical experiences of the African Diaspora as seen from the Americas.
