Course Description

Students discuss the relationship between far right politics and liberal democracy. Focusing on Europe, students examine questions such as: How do far right mobilizations reflect wider structural forms of marginalization in society? Are mainstream political actors complicit in the normalization of exclusionary populist discourse? Does structural racism and other forms of discrimination/domination provide opportunities to far right actors? At the end of the seminar, students work in groups on ideas for counter-measures and present these as a project.

This course adopts a thematic and comparative approach to the histories of Portugal and Spain under the Franco and Salazar regimes. The approach is comparative and the Iberian experience is framed with reference to both the European contexts of interwar and post-war Europe, and to the global politics of international fascism, empire, and the Cold War from the 1930s to the mid 1970s. Social and political life in the period is explored through a diverse range of contemporary sources and perspectives. The course also considers current historiographical, political, and social science literatures and debates.

Course Description
The class explores how the notions of planning and the design of cities emerged during the transition of the late nineteenth century. It first examines the process of urbanization and urban change in European cities. It then articulates concepts relevant to urban planning within different national contexts. The conceptual framework focuses on the antagonism and cooperation among civil servants, technical experts, and decision-makers. The class takes short conceptual excursions in London, Paris, Vienna, Manchester, Berlin, Rome, Barcelona, and Prague. Finally, the class incorporates a comparative exercise with the cities in expansion in the late twentieth century. The course explores how new urban artifacts, including buildings and neighborhoods, were conceived, and who took care of assembling and deploying these spatial interventions among the growing number of local policy tools. At the end of this course, students have acquired a basic knowledge of European urbanization since the nineteenth century.
