It provides an introduction to the critical analysis of artworks, including painting, mosaic, fine metalwork, manuscripts, sculpture, buildings and the built environment. The course considers such matters as the iconography of major religious and mythological subjects, issues of style and the functions of works of art and architecture. Art works are considered in the context of influential factors such as historical period, geographic location, inter-cultural influences and the prevailing social, political, and religious environments.

Course Description
Modernism and postmodernism are well-known concepts characterizing the period from 1789 to the present. Modernism includes the ideas behind empirical sciences, anti-idealistic philosophy, liberal democracy, secularism, and belief in reason that has emerged since the Enlightenment. Conventionally, modernism and postmodernism are separated into scientific and artistic enterprises. This course focuses on the cognitive links between what Foucault called the “human sciences” and aesthetic modernism in the arts including literary criticism. In the dynamic culture of modernism, a move towards greater subjectivity was a common feature, however in the human sciences it was modified by a devotion to rationality and scientific progress. In its first phase, postmodernism opposed modernism and regarded self and culture as linguistic constructs. Currently a move towards universalism, tradition, and religion is articulated among thinkers such as Giorgio Agamben and Slavoj i ek. The course views modernism and postmodernism primarily as modes of thinking that affirm the power of human beings to create, improve, and remake their environment with the aid of scientific knowledge, technology, and art and thus reshape the world. These modes of thinking and the ideas that constitute them are presented in a historical context.

Course Description
The first term gives students an overview of the trajectory of European integration, of the main institutions of the EU, and of theories that help with the interpretation of the successive steps in European integration as well as policy-making in the EU. In the second term, students examine some of the most highly contested debates about European integration, including debates over EU enlargement, democratic legitimacy, or UK membership. Frequent reference is made to current EU affairs, as reported in the UK media, equipping students with the skills to follow these news, and challenge the ideologically charged way in which EU affairs are often reported in the media.

Course Description
What does it mean to be European at the beginning of the 21st century? Why have issues of nationality, ethnicity and race become so central to Europeans during the last few years? What is the historical and cultural background to developments such as the fracturing of former multi-national states, the worrying rise of populists and the far right in politics, the development of a supra-national European Union, and the public debate on asylum and immigration? This course examines recent debates about the nation-state, national identity, ethnicity, immigration and the idea of Europe from the end of the Cold War to the present day.
