Course Description

This five-week advanced summer course is intended for students who have completed the intermediate series of Spanish language at the university level and stresses productive and receptive conversation and improvement of linguistic and communicative skills. The class aims to improve the development of comprehension and discourse production at a level near that of an educated native speaker. The course includes the practice of listening comprehension strategies in order to facilitate access to different types of discourse at varying levels of difficulty.

Course Description

This course discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using digital audiovisual media in the processes of data collection, analysis, and presentation of conclusions in social anthropology. It analyze the tradition of social photography and its main contributions, the use of photography as a tool, and the main techniques used. The course also examines visual anthropology versus ethnographic cinema as well as the rules for construction of anthropological audiovisual.

Course Description
This course is for students who already have an intermediate level of Spanish. Students develop communicative competence in a wide range of situations including more specialized topics. The course focuses on a broad range of contemporary themes and issues. Course Description
This course offers an analysis of Mexico City as a case study in urban sociology. An emphasis is placed on urbanization across three major periods: 1900-1940 (slow growth of the urban population); 1940-1980 (urbanization acceleration and a concentration of economic activity in Mexico City); and 1980-present (a decrease in the rise of urban populations and consolidation of suburbs into Greater Mexico City). Particular topics include sociological studies of cities; the history of Mexico City; modernization, growth, and concentration; the economy of Mexico City from 1980-2000; the political evolution and management of Greater Mexico City (ZMVM); problems concerning housing and spatial segregation; the natural environment; and space, youth, and culture.
