Course Description
This intensive course offers instruction in research methodologies for the humanities and social sciences, introducing the theoretical and practical issues raised by field research as specific training for students preparing to conduct such research. Topics include research questions, appropriate sources of data, methods of data collection. Students visit libraries, research centers, and archives as appropriate. They consider research questions by preparing questionnaires, conducting interviews, and drawing distinctions between description and interpretation with the goal of understanding what constitutes scientific knowledge within the context of field research. Students submit a field notebook and prepare project outlines that are reviewed in a roundtable seminar with the specialist/mentors who will supervise the research itself. Assessment for the course is based on weekly assignments and a final exam.
