This course offers a study of artistic development in Spain throughout the 20th century in its dual aspect: the contribution of Spanish artists in the context of the international avant-garde movement and developments that occurred within Spain itself.

This course examines the artistic production of Latin America from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, with special emphasis on postcolonial and decolonial revisions 

This course explores the concept of sustainability. Topics include: crossroads of unsustainability; systemic thinking; poverty and inequality; socio-environmental conflicts; governance (tragedy) of the commons; institutions for sustainable development; education for sustainability; food systems; sustainable cities; new economies-- circular economy; ethics of care.

This course examines the main theoretical approaches and discussions of the sociology of the educational system. It analyzes the main indicators and educational data for Spain and other countries. This course looks at educational policies and the assessment of the education system. It explores the relationship between social structure, economy, culture, and the educational system. Topics include: education as a socialization process; the social functions of the school; origins and evolution of the Spanish educational system; the provision of education and educational policies; reform and innovation in teaching; factors affecting education-- processes and education results, international assessments of educational performance and international studies on education, education and inequality, and education and employment in Spain; evaluation of the Spanish educational system-- main problems and major challenges; case studies of educational systems in advanced societies and in Latin America.

This course offers a survey of Spanish art history in three main areas with an emphasis on the principal artists and most relevant movements, such as the Spanish history of architecture and urban design from prehistory to the present, focusing on Madrid and the role of building in its changing society; Spanish painting from the Age of Mannerism to 19th-century modern art; and major movements in painting and sculpture of the 20th century in Spain.

This course examines the main issues in the struggle for equal rights for persons with disabilities. Topics include: disability in human rights discourse; models of treatment of disability and human rights; disability in the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; equality, non-discrimination, and disability; universal accessibility and reasonable accommodation; autonomy, independent living, and social participation; legal capacity issues; inclusive education; inclusive workplace.

This course examines the history of European cultures, with a special focus on Spain, from pre-history to the present day. Topics include: the Renaissance; Reformation; Enlightenment; Industrial Revolution; Russian revolution and formation of the USSR; WWI; WWII; Spanish republics; dictatorship; Cold War; de-colonization; democracy; the European Union.

This course offers an overview of Iberian Art from its beginnings to the present day. It explores architecture, painting, and sculpture from various styles and eras including: Islamic, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Golden Age, and Baroque. 

This course is designed for UCEAP students at the intermediate (B1) level to improve, consolidate, and expand their grammatical knowledge of the Spanish language. Class meetings are supplemented with practical experiences where students visit emblematic locations in Madrid to practice Spanish communication in real-time.
