Course Description
This is a special studies course involving an internship with a corporate, public, governmental, or private organization, arranged with the Study Center Director or Liaison Officer. Specific internships vary each term and are described on a special study project form for each student. A substantial paper or series of reports is required. Units vary depending on the contact hours and method of assessment. The internship may be taken during one or more terms but the units cannot exceed a total of 12.0 for the year.

Course Description
This intensive course offers instruction in research methodologies for the humanities and social sciences, introducing the theoretical and practical issues raised by field research as specific training for students preparing to conduct such research. Topics include research questions, appropriate sources of data, methods of data collection. Students visit libraries, research centers, and archives as appropriate. They consider research questions by preparing questionnaires, conducting interviews, and drawing distinctions between description and interpretation with the goal of understanding what constitutes scientific knowledge within the context of field research. Students submit a field notebook and prepare project outlines that are reviewed in a roundtable seminar with the specialist/mentors who will supervise the research itself. Assessment for the course is based on weekly assignments and a final exam.

Course Description

The course focuses on issues, historical contexts, and social aspects of Spanish culture. Emphasis is placed on socio-cultural issues related to culture and the critical tools necessary for contextualizing, analyzing, and commenting on texts and documents in order to relate them to the most significant transformations in the areas of language reference. The course focuses on the analysis of excerpts of a selection of literary texts as well as documentaries of the time. Specific course topics vary each term. The topic for Fall 2023 is the Re-elaborations and Cultural Transformations through the 20th Century and the Contemporary World. Specific topics covered include the Second Republic; the Civil War and the Francoist Repression; and the transition to democracy. The course focuses on how to retell history from realism to postmodernism and neo-modernity, and how historical memory is presented through different genres including theater and literature. The course also focuses on debates regarding ethical questions including collective memory, forgetting and recognition, reparation and post-memory, individual rights, and mass education. The analysis is based on images, sound documents, fragments of historical and philosophical essays, newspapers, and documentaries of the period.
