Course Description

This course examines the psycholinguistic processes that underlie the acquisition, understanding and production of speech as well as the organization of these processes in the brain. It discusses the traditional debates related to the genesis of language, its evolution and its acquisition. The course also reviews known speech processing models in the area of psycholinguistic studies that describe the processes of understanding and production of both oral and written discourse.

Course Description
This course examines the trans-Atlantic variants of Spanish, as well as their linguistic characteristics conferred through contact, as important features of the identity of communities which use Spanish in their daily communication. Topics covered include: introduction to the study of language contact; Spanish in America: diachronic processes of transatlantic varieties; Spanish in contact with Amerindian languages in the colonies and today; Spanish in the United States and northern Mexico; Spanish-based Creole languages.

This course focuses on the life and artistic production of Francisco de Goya and also examines his influence and contribution to the art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course follows the artist's progress through his early life and first murals, paintings, and portraits; his rise to fame and period at court; his paintings and prints of the independence wars; his art under absolutism; his final years in Bordeaux; critical approaches to Goya's work and recent scientific findings.

Course Description

This five-week intensive summer course is intended for advanced heritage language learners -- students who have native or near-native language skills in Spanish -- who have had some formal instruction in the language. It concentrates on improving students' ability to write academic Spanish. It requires heavy assignments of written work and the review and correction of assignments based on extensive, detailed comments by the instructor.
