Course Description

This course is aimed at students who have completed the beginner level. It provides a comprehensive study of the first half of the intermediate level of Japanese language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Through in-depth reading of textbooks, the course increases one's knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and kanji, while improving their reading comprehension, writing, and expression abilities. Similarly, the course improves one's oral expression skills to explain and discuss what they have understood.

Course Description
This course focuses on vocabulary and idioms used in economics and the social sciences. The course relies on various texts and articles from Japanese economic newspapers and journals. Students also improve listening comprehension through watching excerpts from TV news programs that are relevant to the articles they read in class. Assessment: class attendance and participation, midterm exam, final exam.

Course Description

This course develops a well-balanced, intermediate level proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It introduces 100 important intermediate level sentence patterns through close reading of texts. Students master approximately 4000 basic words and 500 intermediate kanji. Students expand their vocabulary and their understanding of grammar and sentence patterns through the reading of texts and short composition practices. Note: Intermediate Japanese language levels at the host university are comparable to UC upper-division language courses.

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to visual analysis of popular culture media in postwar Japan, specifically film, television, manga, and anime. As the course approaches each medium, the course uses film theory and formal analysis to discuss them. In analyzing issues specific to each of these media and across genres, the course discussion is framed by some key questions: How do form and genre affect content? How do texts address specific audiences, such as teenagers, boys, or girls? What is the role of fan culture?

Course Description
This course teaches basic grammar and vocabulary needed for everyday life and attending university classes in Japan. The course covers new expressions and sentence structures, and when, where, and how to use them, to achieve the below goals: Comprehend concise conversations and monologues about familiar topics in everyday and classroom situations; enumerate events, briefly describe them, tell stories, express thoughts and feelings; interact with other people with little difficulty in everyday situation.

Course Description
This course is designed for students who have learned basic Japanese grammar, and have acquired a strong command of Hiragana and Katakana. This course is also for students who can speak and understand Japanese but have never studied Japanese language officially. It is a bridge-course between first level and second level Japanese language courses. Students develop a solid base of knowledge for Japanese through writing practice, in preparation for a smooth transition to the second level Japanese language course. Students write about familiar topics and experiences in a series of sentences using the first-level grammar and Kanji reviewed in the class, and read and write about 160 Kanji.
