Course Description
Many Japanese literary works have been adapted into films, often with new interpretations. This course examines important Japanese literary works and the respective films that are adapted from them. The literary texts, chosen from a variety of sources (premodern to contemporary), demonstrate different perspectives on the Japanese literary world, and indirectly that of the Japanese culture and society. As a re-creation of the literary works, the films that are produced from these literary works, again, provide new perspectives from which literary subject or social issues can be interpreted and re-interpreted.
