Course Description
This course introduces students to current changes of international and European law in the direction of forming more comprehensive regimes, applying supranational legal forms, applying international courts, and attaining the qualities of constitutional legal systems. The course also gives an introduction to the theories of democracy which are relevant to the new constitutional levels. It is suggested in international constitutional theory that, instead of a dichotomy between national and international law, we are now increasingly seeing forms of combination, overlapping, and interdependence between several constitutional levels of law. Particular emphasis is on the constitutional character of the European Union/European Commission treaties and the European Economic Area treaty. This is partly because these treaties presently are the most comprehensive international treaties seen from the point of view of the nation-states and their regulatory traditions, but also partly because there is a rich legal literature around them. The course discusses how the evolution of an increasing Europeanization and internationalization has influenced the legal concepts of sovereignty, democracy and nation-state, and more comprehensively the concepts and the discourse of constitutions and constitutionality. The concept of citizenship is discussed within the new and more international constitutional framework. The evolution of a more international and European orientation of the European nation-states is put into a historical perspective. There are also articles discussing normative aspects of this evolution and how it should be described legally, institutionally, and normatively.

Course Description
The European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) originated with a view to safeguard the EU's security and strategic interests and to promote its values amongst its neighbors. It aimed to develop a “ring of friends” around the EU's borders. Instead, it seems that EU's neighborhood has become “a ring of fire” due to emerging geopolitical, security, economic, and social challenges. This course has a twofold objective. The primary aim is to introduce students to the legal and institutional aspects of the EU's international relations through the study of the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP). The additional aim is to provide them with the analytical tools necessary to critically assess how the Union frames and implements its policies among its neighbors. The course is developed along three thematic modules. First, it addresses the specificities of the legal framework governing the EU's international relations. Secondly, the ENP is examined in light of its objectives, instruments, and methodology. Thirdly, specific case studies serve as a basis to explore the ENP's bilateral, regional, and sectoral dimensions. At the end of this course, students are able to situate ENP-related external relations law material in its political, economic, and historical context.

Course Description
The course provides an introduction to the study of law, beginning with the basic concepts of jurisprudence. The course explores the economic and political dimension of law, understanding it as the level playing field of any social relation, both at the domestic and the international level. The course addresses some of the essential rules applicable to economic activities, focusing on the interaction between party autonomy and market regulation in business transactions. The course adopts an international perspective and highlights the main differences between civil law and common law jurisdictions in the context of the Western legal tradition. The aim is to provide a guidance on issues that assume relevance in the context of international relationships, in which the applicable law can crucially influence the economic outcome of a transaction. On this regard, European Private Law is taken into consideration with a specific focus on rules aiming to detect biases of consumers. In the final part of the course, small groups of attending students are given an assignment where they draft contracts and legal opinions. Students complete a written midterm and final exam.
