After briefly emphasizing the introduction to the course on the "roots" of the European idea and on the different approaches that have been the driving force behind the construction of Europe since the Second World War, the course chooses to first examine the organizations and institutions of the "Europe of Cooperation", focusing in particular on European cooperation in the field of defense (WEU, OSCE, NATO, etc.), in economic matters (OECD, EFTA, etc.) and European cooperation on human rights (Council of Europe and European Convention on Human Rights). In a second part, the "Europe of integration" is considered, and study is more specifically centered around the main characteristics, as well as the main institutions of the European Union.

Course Description
The first term gives students an overview of the trajectory of European integration, of the main institutions of the EU, and of theories that help with the interpretation of the successive steps in European integration as well as policy-making in the EU. In the second term, students examine some of the most highly contested debates about European integration, including debates over EU enlargement, democratic legitimacy, or UK membership. Frequent reference is made to current EU affairs, as reported in the UK media, equipping students with the skills to follow these news, and challenge the ideologically charged way in which EU affairs are often reported in the media.

Course Description
This course covers current events in political sociology by showing the methods and ways of how contemporary research can permit the best understanding of social and political issues of advanced democracies. In this way, the course shows how to have a debate, whether it be on society or science; how the methodological approach allows one to have both a necessary distance from the subject and a space of validation or negation of research hypotheses; or how according to methodological and theoretical constructions there can emerge divided authors and interpretations of studied phenomenon.

Course Description
This course explores and contrasts the diverse ways British novelists, poets, playwrights, and polemicists engaged with significant sociopolitical events of the first half of the 20th century. Starting with the suffrage campaign and finishing with the Spanish Civil War, students read across genres, complicating distinctions of "high" and "low," examining how writers, both modernist and middlebrow, wrote these events into their texts. This course also introduces students to the protocols of archival research and the rewards of working with primary materials, including letters and diaries, newspapers and periodicals, and minutes and organizational records.

Course Description
The course focuses on the history of the entity known as “Mitteleuropa” in the last two hundred years from a German perspective. The course covers different definitions and ideological uses of this concept and includes an analysis of its moving boundaries, sometimes including Germany, sometimes not. The main themes studied in the course are the unification of Germany and its rise as a great power, compared to the decline of the Habsburg Empire and the (re)birth of new states following World War I. Students analyze the rise of extremism in the 20s and 30s, especially National Socialism and its impact on the countries of Central Europe, including World War II and its consequences, the disappearance of Central Europe, and Communist rule over Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany. The semester ends with the rebirth of Central Europe after the end of Communism.

Course Description
For a long time, Spain was considered an exception in Europe due to the legacy of the seemingly interminable authoritarian regime of Francisco Franco, one of the longest-lasting dictatorships in Europe (1939-1975). Ironically, this image has been radically reversed in recent years. Spain is frequently considered an exemplary case, given that its peaceful transition to democracy (1975-1978), seconded by its subsequent impressive economic growth during the 1980s and 1990s, has served as a model throughout Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe. This course explores exaggerated images of Spain as both a backward nation during the civil war and the dictatorship, and a triumphant one during democracy. The course analyzes these historical periods in the context of broad European trends. The course covers the defining period of contemporary Spanish history, a post-imperial Spain, adjusting with difficulty to a new European identity, following European patterns (industrialization, demographic transition, democratization), but with important specificities due to historical traditions, economic backwardness, geography, and foreign intervention.

Course Description

While the study of social and public policy has traditionally been concerned with actions taken by governments, the wider non-governmental sector is increasingly recognised as playing a key role. This course focuses on both international and local “non-governmental organizations” (NGOs) that have emerged around the world to address a wide range of social, political, and environmental concerns. It offers a critical perspective on NGOs in the context of development and social policy, covering both theoretical and policy issues. The focus is on two main inter-related themes: how NGOs serve as vehicles through which citizens organize, and how NGOs are instruments through which states, businesses, and funding agencies pursue their interests.
