Course Description

This course offers a sociological view of economic, social, and political processes, with a special focus on global social change and development. The course provides the knowledge needed to understand and critically analyze discussions about global social change, focusing especially on the post-war period. The teaching consists of lectures, exercises, group assignments and seminars.  In the first module, explore both classical and modern sociological theories. Examine the economic, social, and political transformations central to classical sociology. Key topics include the rise of nation-states, capitalism, bureaucracies, rationalization, and the increasing division of labor within and between countries. The course also covers foundational scientific theories developed in classical sociology that continue to influence the social sciences today.  In the second module, address current development challenges around the world, using both macro (large scale) and micro (small scale) perspectives. Focus on how societies are structured and how they evolve, considering institutions, structures, and social networks, and their complex interactions. Use sociological theories and concepts to shed light on how inequality is created and sustained. The module ends with an evaluation of various social policy interventions through the lens of the theories we have discussed in the course.

Course Description
The first half of the course introduces major theories of economic sociology and their relationship to mainstream economics. The course begins with the field of behavioral economics and asks how far its theories take us towards a sociological perspective. This lays the groundwork for examining the idea of embeddedness, which has been economic sociology's main metaphor for socializing our view of markets since the 1980s. The course then looks at the alternative theoretical perspectives which have developed in the decades since, including the idea of "markets as politics" and the notions of "calculation" and "performativity." The second half of the course focuses on the application of these concepts to case studies of neoliberalism, carbon markets, financial models, and regulation. For example, the course asks if economic theory is not just modelling the economy but also playing a large role in shaping it and what this means for a society. Students also look at the sociological mechanisms involved in the uptake of mathematical financial models and their possible role in economic crises.

Starting with a historical review of colonial policing in Hong Kong, the course unfolds gradually to reveal common policing issues and proceeds to assess the impact of transnational events like cross-border crime and global protest on local policing. Case studies of police practices in both local and global contexts are critically evaluated to identify the social forces that shape the respective social control process.
