Course Description
The goal of this seminar is to understand how opinion is formed and to analyze how this opinion, once formed, can play on political, economic, social and foreign policy decisions. The course looks at all the elements that contribute to how the citizen and/or the employee forms their opinion and how this affects the entity, the political, economic or social actors. Should one follow opinions or can one resist when one is in a position of responsibility? The discussions treat all the facets of opinion and their influence on decision-making, as much as conforming to it as distancing oneself from it.

Course Description
For the social sciences, media are resonant sites for the dissemination and production of culture, those shared norms, values, ideas, beliefs, practices of a particular group of people. Whether it is print media, television, radio, cinema or the internet, cellular/mobile phones, online gaming, or social media, media pull a selection of elements from a broader public culture, transforming and returning them to the public space. As such, media are sites of power relations, shaping individual and collective life as we know it. The task of the social sciences, in this case, has been to interrogate these various media and interpret how they work and what they do culturally, socially, and politically. This course explores three different ways of thinking about the relationship between media and culture: media as representation, media as infrastructure, and media as data/algorithm. In examining these three approaches, our broader consideration centers on critically appreciating how each plays out within our contemporary world and, more specifically, how each disseminates and produces public culture.

Course Description
We often hear that we live in an “information society” or are preparing to work in a “knowledge economy”. Drawing on classic and cutting-edge research on the system of information creation and provision, this course provides conceptual foundations for historical, political-economic, and policy analysis of information institutions, technologies, and infrastructures. This course examines the historical and contemporary transformation of information as a social and political economic process, by focusing on how and why social development came to be centered around information. What role has been played in this transition by the historical role of information in times of revolution, imperial domination, utopian movements, and innovations in information and communications technologies (ICTs)? What challenges does this informationally dominated society pose to contemporary life and social stability? Assessment: class participation, class presentation and leading discussion, 4 one-page mini-papers.
