Course Description
This is a two-part course on Urban Sociology. Students must take both parts A and B. No partial credit is possible. 5 units per part with research paper. Students who complete a term paper are awarded one extra unit for each part. Total units possible for both parts is 10. The course focuses on urban sociology in its historical evolution, the schools of thought and the basic theoretical concepts that have been proposed and developed. Special attention is devoted to the main paradigms connected to the emerging issues in the discipline as well as the main methods and techniques in empirical research on urban and regional phenomena. Part A covers Comparative Urban Sociology: the US and Europe. The course covers the historical development of urban sociology in the United States and Europe, problems of methodology and research, urbanism as a way of life, and its evolutionary phases. Emphasis is on the theoretical writings of E. Durkheim, M. Halbwachs, G. Simmel, L. Wirth, and J. Jacobs, in order to deepen the relationship between humans and the environment in urban areas. Part B covers The Chicago School. The course covers the birth and development of urban sociology in the United States with particular reference to the Chicago Ecological School tradition including an empirical study of urban poverty and social capital. Part B employs a Chicago approach to the study of urban phenomena and integrates it with the contribution of narrative theory in order to produce a mixed method research approach. This part includes seminars on specific topics with the participation of guest speakers and the active involvement of the students. On-going research projects are presented, as well as classical research typical of the discipline. Assessment is based on a final oral exam on the assigned course readings.

Course Description

This course focuses on sociological concepts and methods through the lens of the city. It applies sociological concepts to the city that can be seen while walking around, such as the city of buildings and people; and those less noticeable, such as the city of sentiments, conflict, traffic flows, bike messengers, sewage networks, asset prices and municipal taxation, and animals and nature. This course uses key sociological readings, case studies, and topics in the news to study the city as a complex space where buildings, people, animals, laws, policies, and international financial flows intersect to produce our lived experience. It focuses on close reading of texts, understanding the key argument of each text, and applying concepts to the real world; and covers the key strategies and skills of academic writing as students produce a research paper based on a city of their choice. The first part of the course explores foundational texts, while the rest of the course addresses specific questions related to housing markets, social policy, violence, drugs, environmental change, segregation, urban infrastructure, and urban regulations.

Course Description
This course asks students to lead an urban study, in groups of 2 or 3, on the problematic case of "Larger Paris." Guided each step of the way by the instructors, students take the role of an urban planner surveying a site and a given subject. Through this study, inspired by professional practices, this class also offers students a first-hand approach to the broader issues of contemporary urbanism, as well as a look at the large scope of competencies needed to tap into to understand and govern a city: sociological, economic, political, historical, geographical, legal, architectural, and property stakes.

Course Description

Paris has long been recognized as a center for both revolutionary activism and innovative artistic production. This course explores the coming together of these two domains through diverse visual manifestations of social justice and advocacy produced and/or displayed in Paris from the Revolution to the present, including painting, sculpture, architecture, performance, installations, photography, video, posters, graffiti, and street art. Students explore the ways in which the urban landscape bears the scars of revolutionary destruction and serves as a showcase for politically engaged production, housed in its museums or visible to all on the streets. The instructional format consists of both lectures and group site visits throughout the city, to venues including public and private museums, which are studied both for their content, architecture, and their politics of display; galleries, artist collectives, and Parisian neighborhoods with outdoor art displays.

Course Description
This is a course about the interconnections between cities and literature. Students read prose fiction, poetry, and drama, exploring how various cities, including Dublin, Belfast, London, Chester, Paris, Prague, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, figure in these writings and how the writers themselves interacted with the cities they lived and worked in. Because the authors and texts on the course represent a variety of historical periods, from medieval to the present, students also examine the relationship between history, politics, and the changing trends in literary representations of urban locations.

Course Description

Addressing urban change and apprehending the complexity of cities demands a distinct interdisciplinary approach across the arts, sciences, social sciences, and humanities, each bringing their own theoretical and methodological perspectives to bear on a phenomenon that has traditionally been studied from within disciplinary silos. This course acknowledges the complexity of cities as distinctive material environments for social life, raising questions of how the different dimensions of the built (and imagined) urban environment permeate everyday experiences of the contemporary city.

Course Description

This course focuses on the French art of strolling aimlessly through the city from the late 19th century to present. Exploring the intersection between the city walker and the urban environments navigated on foot, this course provides a unique perspective on the role of public space in the construction of urban modernity in France. The course adopts an explicitly class-, race-, and gender-critical approach to the study of this able-bodied practice that has traditionally been associated with a certain Baudelairean archetype of bourgeois masculinity. The course investigates who has the right to linger and be seen in public space, how the act of strolling aimlessly through the city intersects with other forms of societal privilege, and when and where wandering becomes a means of protest or resistance. By tracing the itineraries and embodied geographies that are traversed in this practice, this course creates a map of social mobility and urban modernity in the ever-evolving French city.
