Chile

This is an upper-level elective course on the management of wildlife. It introduces students to problems concerning wildlife management in the context of human and economic activity. The course addresses both the mechanisms by which human activity interacts with wildlife as well as methods for mitigating the unwanted results of these interactions.

This course requires the reading and interpretation of cultural essays related to the theme of national identity and continental Latin American identity. In addition to studying the evolution and forms of this kind of literary genre, the course demands critical analysis of the different authors and their works including José Martí, Pedro Henríquez Ureña, Alfonso Reyes, Octavio Paz y Luis Oyarzún. Students analyze the problems and cultural models suggested by these essayists and interpret the construction of a traditional Latin American culture.

This course provides a critical analysis of the development of state security and defense policy, the factors impacting the policy development of different states, and the impact on the development of military policy and use of force. Topics covered include: the fundamentals of defense policies; threats, military structure and defense strategies; case studies of the U.S., Peru, and Argentina; Chilean defense policy and process of national defense modernization.

This course provides a study the historical dynamics of the indigenous communities of Chile that existed during the time of the Spanish conquest. It examines the effects of conquest and the resulting sociocultural and economic processes that took place during the 16th century. The course examines the cultural developments both prior to and as a result of the conquest, taking into account the early development of the Chilean colonial society and the transformations of indigenous societies that shared its space.

The course covers basic aspects of water management in Chilean agricultural systems. Topics covered include: hydrological cycle and its components at different levels; water quality and impact on the sustainable productivity of soils; agricultural hydraulics; legal and economic aspects associated with water use in silvopasture; surface and pressurized irrigation methods.

This course explores Latin America's increasing participation in the international political system. It examines international affairs from an international management standpoint with an emphasis on political and macro strategic environments. Topics covered include: critical concepts and current affairs; political and cultural changes in Latin America; the ABC countries; relations with Mercosur and the European Union; relations with the United States; BRICS countries and the Chilean experience; Latin America after NAFTA; strategic regionalism and political changes.

This course explores the content, scope, and pending challenges of the struggle of indigenous women in Latin America, based on critical analysis of the notions of gender and ethnicity. It reflects on the scope of different perspectives in multi-ethnic and racialized contexts, as well discussions about dissent and sexual difference in multi-ethnic contexts. Topics include: Mexico-- the proposal of the Zapatista Caracoles; Bolivia-- struggles of the Aymaras of Kollosuyo; Chile-- the struggles of the Mapuche in Wallmapu; diversity and sexual dissent.

This course applies theoretical tools, scientific evidence and policy examples to contextualize and problematize, from a gender and interdisciplinary perspective, social gender relations in a context of inequalities, in an effort to understand the manifestation of sexist violence and ways to overcome it. The first course module provides basic concepts of gender theories, a historical analysis of the movements of international women and in Chile from a feminist economic perspective. The second module analyzes the various expressions of gender violence.
