Cantonese

This intensive course is designed for international undergraduate students, exchange students and visiting students (non-heritage learners) who have completed CHIN9512 or who can demonstrate equivalent competence through the placement test. It consolidates students’ mastery of the Jyutping phonetic romanization transcription, and at enhancing their ability to express themselves fluently in Cantonese and accurately write messages in Jyutping. The course concentrates on growth in oral communication and listening comprehension abilities through a wide variety of communication-based assessments and assignments such as Cantonese speaking Tests and oral presentations. Practical sentence patterns and vocabulary is also introduced.

This course examines basic communication in Hong Kong Sign Language. An emphasis will be placed on the essential grammar of the Hong Kong Sign Language. It also offers a general introduction to the culture and customs of the local Deaf community.

This is a foundation course on Cantonese which introduces Cantonese romanization systems to students. Course contents include basic daily conversations, vowels and tone exercises and pronunciation practice. 

This course examines identity, cultural and urban space issues in Hong Kong in the local-national-global nexus, focusing on how popular culture, the state and civil society shape meanings, values, discourses and ideologies, and vice versa, from colonial times to the post-colonial era.

This course may only be taken in conjunction with the Beginning Cantonese course (CLCC1113) An elementary course with a focus on fluency in basic vocabulary and grammar points through various kinds of speaking practice. Real life settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc. Assessment: student performance (25%), quizzes (50%), and final exam (25%).
