This course is an upper elementary reading and writing course in Putonghua.

This course teaches basic Chinese vocabulary used in a business environment. The class is limited to students who are capable of more than 1500 Chinese vocabulary or have taken Chinese classes for more than 800 hours (which equals to finishing the textbook Practical Audio-Visual Chinese II). The textbook used for this class is Far East Business Chinese (L.1~7). This class is taught only in Chinese.

This course introduces the major theoretical schools of thought in social change theory. Through the course, students learn how to analyze social change and improve their understanding of social change in China since 1949.

This course aims at enhancing students’ communicative competence, specifically targeting at speaking, reading and writing.  Students will be exposed to Chinese society and culture through a greater variety of topical discussions and different audiovisual media include films (movies), television, and Vlog.

An important part of diplomatic work, economic diplomacy is based on international political economy, international economics, and international economic law. Course topics include the theoretical framework and role of economy in diplomacy; the functions, characteristics, rules and objectives of economic diplomacy; the forms and means of economic diplomacy; and policy effects of economic diplomacy.

The course provides a study of architectural culture, which is one of the traditional Chinese cultures. Topics include basic theories, general concepts, and main contents of Chinese traditional architectural culture; its historical development process, achievements, and social and cultural significance; current situation of preservation and protection of Chinese traditional buildings; practical value and influence of traditional architectural culture; language and cultural knowledge related to traditional architectural culture.

This course adheres to the concept of general education, based on the main body of film art, and also on the appeal of film works and the unique analysis of artistic styles. It uses film case analysis as a method and audiovisual language as a basic tool. The audio-visual language and narrative techniques of movies are studied for their artistic and ideological nature, so that students can understand the rules of film art creation, and master the great aesthetic value of the film (ideological and emotional), so as to cultivate their thinking ability and creative ability.

This course will introduce

1) Diplomatic system, including the historic evolution of diplomacy, diplomatic manners and principles, and diplomatic bureaucracy and staff establishment.

2) Content and process of bilateral diplomacy, including functions of bilateral diplomacy, diplomatic negotiations and diplomatic treaties as results.

3) The trend of contemporary diplomacy, including summit diplomacy, multilateral diplomacy, mediation, public diplomacy, and collaborative diplomacy.

4) The characteristics, style, and development of Chinese diplomacy, such that students will gain systematic understanding of diplomacy’s effects in contemporary international relations, and learn basic diplomatic affairs knowledge and skills.

This course explores the basic theories regarding the economics of money, banking, and financial markets. Topics include why money is needed; the monetary system and financial system; how money be should managed; and what kind of financial system is best.
