The first part of the course introduces American art and artists, with a focus on the second half of the 20th century. It includes a survey of American art from Abstract Expressionism to Land Art, through Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Pop Art, Graffiti Art, Hyperrealism, Body Art. The course highlights the interplay between artistic practices and discourses. It brings to the fore the textual dimension or discursive component in a selection of postwar American artistic practices and artworks while examining the status of commentaries in their relationship to the artwork, be they statements by artists or by other commentators (reviewers, critics, writers, scholars). The second part of the course focuses on the Ekphrastic poetry of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), the leading figure of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, particularly on some of his most significant double works. Close reading is also essential in showing the fruitful relations between art and poetry in the Victorian Age.

This course provides knowledge about the most important power electronic circuit configurations, including both power semiconductors and passive components like inductors and capacitors in addition to how modulation and current control is done in the most relevant circuits. The course includes a project to design a power electronic circuit with a specific set of functional specifications. Participants develop and verify (electrically and thermally) a power electronic converter for a low power application like an electric scooter or bicycle motor drive. The battery supply and the motor are given, but the power electronic converter with its modulation and control are developed as a part of the course. Topics include diodes, transistors (BJT, IGBT, MOSFET), materials (silicon, silicon carbide), inductors, capacitors, sensors (current, voltage). Function, mechanical and thermal design, aging, drive and protection circuits, various bridges such as 1Q, 2Q and 3-phase 2- and multi-level converters, parasitic components, load currents, and earth currents, carrier modulation, sampled current control, tolerance band control of current, voltage control, switching power supplies, motor drive systems for DC and AC motors, solar cell converters, electric vehicle chargers, "Unified Power Flow Controllers" (UPFC), active power filters, and high voltage direct current (HVDC). Assumed prior knowledge: ESSF01 Analogue Circuits, ESS030, ESSF20 Physics of Devices, ESSF15 Electrical Engineering (EE) or MIE012, EIEF35 Electrical Engineering, basic course (ME) and FRT010, FRTF05 Automatic Control, Basic Course.

This course introduces some of the central issues and concepts involved in a critical consideration of punishment and penal systems. The course explores the main theoretical perspectives and applies these to some contemporary problems in the field. Topics include the aim of punishment and societal structure; the political economy of punishment; punishment and discipline; punishment and culture; probation, electronic monitoring, and risk; restorative justice; prison; the death penalty and life imprisonment ; and fines and intersectionality.

The course explores the needs and rights of children and young people involved in offending behavior and in the youth justice system, and how we should respond to those children and young people who cause harm to others. The course unpicks the politicization of youth crime and the demonization of young people, reflects on the recent development and explores the current Positive Youth Justice approach. The course considers the research evidence that attempts to explain why children and young people become involved in offending behavior, ranging from anti-social behavior to grave crimes. Understanding current priorities within the youth justice system, such as the over-representation of specific groups of children or their involvement in "county lines" offences, is an integral part of the course; the course also considers international perspectives on youth crime to see how youth justice systems operate elsewhere in the world.

From the 1960s, British and North American publishing industries started to undergo a process known as conglomeration, a form of financialization that increasingly held publishers accountable to producing books that would make near-immediate profit rather than incentivizing editors to pursue work that might amass reputation and financial returns over time. In this course students examine the narrative of conglomeration amidst other developments in literary publishing and editorial politics during this time, covering topics including: commercial and independent presses; feminist publishing; under representation of POC authors; the relationship between publishing and political movements; the poetics of editing; the outsourcing of work to the Global South; and self-publishing. Throughout the course, students remain attuned to questions of literary form and the politics of editing and publishing.

This course presents an analysis of the management, economics, and information systems theories and practices in online business. This is a management information systems course and not a technical course. It focuses on the study of the impact of digital technologies on business strategies and market configurations. Internet-based systems offer new means to operate businesses and to compete in the global marketplace and it is important for future executives and entrepreneurs to understand the economic and managerial implications of these transformations. Students gain a good understanding of why and how successful companies are taking advantage of e-business, as well as an understanding of the main challenges and risks associated with different e-business models and strategies in a fast changing technological and business environment.
