This course provides a rigorous treatment of the core concepts and skills in security investments and portfolio management. The main focus is on the trade-off between risk and return, which is analyzed in a mean variance framework. Along this line, two main theories of asset pricing are explained: the Capital Asset Pricing Model and Arbitrage Pricing Theory. The empirical tests of these two theories are discussed. A team based project asks students to exercise skills of security analysis, portfolio construction, and management.

This course provides an overview of the history, current status, and mitigation strategies for atmospheric environment. It covers the following contents: Formation of the atmosphere Urban atmospheric environment and environmental regulations Human activity and ozone hole After taking the course, you will be able to answer the following questions. Why do we have oxygen in the atmosphere? How does PM2.5 in Beijing form? How did ozone hole form? How have we been resolving these environmental issues in the atmosphere?
COURSE DETAIL
This course examines through three case studies how we should develop legal responses to the challenge of AI. Today AI is used by the police, other law enforcement agencies, and even by private citizens to build smart surveillance networks through the use of live facial recognition cameras and so-called “hot spot” policing. This has the potential to impact our privacy and personal data and risks bias and error in design and deployment. The use of AI in law enforcement is the first case study. The second, the deployment of AI in medical practice and treatment, raises questions of autonomy, consent, confidentiality, and liability. The third case study looks at how public authorities deploy AI in ways which impact all, including digital transformation of public administrative systems, the use of AI in the legal profession and the courts, and the deployment of AI at borders and to manage immigration.
COURSE DETAIL
Students will develop the knowledge, competencies and skills necessary for music performance. Areas to be covered include advanced study of instrumental or vocal technique, and specialization in all related aspects of music performance. Formative feedback in individual and group settings will be provided across the semester. The course involves participation in individual lessons, instrument/voice classes, performance class and/or assigned ensemble activities.

This course introduces a range of issues surrounding the dynamics of disputes and the advanced models of negotiation and mediation designed to aid in their resolution. The focus of the course, which draws on insights from a range of disciplines including law, anthropology, psychology, and economics, is on looking at contemporary dispute resolution theories across a range of settings. An important feature of the course is the way in which it examines the interface between theory and practice. Academic staff is joined by leading practitioners in exposing students to the everyday dynamics of negotiation and mediation.

This course offers a thematic approach to selected literary, cultural, and socio-political processes from across the Spanish and Portuguese speaking-worlds we call Global Iberias. Encompassing Spain and Portugal, Latin America, and Lusophone Africa and Asia, lectures and seminars explore questions of power and creativity, and introduce students to the key concepts for the discussion of social movements, urban regeneration, colonialism and postcolonialism, and literary and cultural movements and ideas, from Modernism and Futurism to Magical Realism. Overall, the course provides students with core conceptual, interpretative, methodological, and presentation skills for the study of the cultures and societies of the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds.
COURSE DETAIL
This course aims to explore the current state of artificial intelligence (AI)/machine translation, and related issues and debates. The first few weeks are devoted to examining major theories and concepts in translation studies. In this process, students are expected to think about what it means to translate and how we translate. Students engage in readings and discussions, focusing on what frameworks and methods have been adopted for translation analysis. The second half of the term involves undertaking a large quantity of translations of various texts, including literary and non-literary texts. Most importantly, students run AI/machine translation themselves and explain in what aspects they are similar and different. Students also, if possible, compare their AI/machine translations with human translations, talking about what AI/machine translation can and cannot do. Finally, we discuss the impact of AI/machine translation on translators, writers, and users in the age of AI.
Topics include Traditional Theories, The basic concepts of early translation theory, Equivalence and equivalent effect, Skopos theory, and AI-based translation.
COURSE DETAIL
In the last few decades, the number of film festivals in the world has boomed. Even more recently, film studies researchers have begun to pay attention to this phenomenon, and the sub-field of film festival studies has grown rapidly. This course combines practice and theory. Students form small groups and curate their own evenings in a week-long campus film festival to be held in the final week of the semester. Students also read a wide range of research in film festival studies.

The goal of this course is to introduce the classical theories in the field of digital and behavioral economics, combined with real cases. By taking the course, students can have a certain understanding of the basic knowledge, current development and research frontiers in the field of digital and behavioral economics.
This course will take digital economics as the main line and basis. Firstly, it introduces the composition and development of digital economics from the macro-perspective. Besides, it mainly focuses on the platform economics, which is a new organizational form spawned by the digital economics. The lecture will cover topics including the development of platform, the main characteristics, the core problem, special issues and the regulation. Some relevant behavioral studies will also be introduced in order to help better understand the platform and its participants ’strategic behavior and intention.

This class discusses the basic concepts and methods of information resource management, including capturing, representing, organizing, storing, processing and exploiting information. In particular, the introductory session will provide an overview of the definition and general types of information, the new forms of information in the era of social media, and the definition of information source. Web search engines, as one of the most important channels to obtain information in our daily life, will be discussed. Then, the class will cover the process of capturing, encoding, and initial processing of different information in digital media, followed by the essence of information management and extraction technologies, such as data warehouse, XML, and the Semantic Web. However, while more and more available information accelerates the development of new knowledge, issues pertaining to information security become evident too. Hence, this module also briefly explains the concepts of confidentiality, integrity and availability, as well as the mechanisms that provide security in various information systems and applications. Next, this module focuses on the applications of information resource management technologies in enterprises and in Web 2.0-baed e-commerce. First, the information architecture, strategies and services in enterprises w1 be introduced. Several cases on how information can be a strategic resource for companies will be studied. Second, several applications in Web 2.0-based e-commerce will be discussed in detail. Last but not least, in view of the abundance of information nowadays, this module will encourage student discussions on the problem of finding the relevant “needle in the haystack" and the problem of information overload.
