Course Description
The course examines the intersectionality among gender, sexuality, and race in contemporary political issues in, but not limited to, Asian societies. The course looks into how contemporary politics and gender structures in the region interplay and produce racial identities, which can be complicated through the lens of gender. For example, the Korean-Japan and China-Japan disputes over the issue of comfort women in World War II; Gender activism in Gaza and Arab Spring, female suicide bombers in Middle East and religious right-wing movements in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The course examines how gender, sexuality, and race are deeply embedded within the global politics as well as local social mores. This course is divided into two parts. The first part reviews some key concepts, such as citizenship, war, democracy, nationalism, human rights and so on, through the lens of gender. The second part analyzes these concepts and examines the debates through cutting-edge case studies. Topics include comfort women, sexual violence in war, terrorism, female suicide-bombers, right-wing religious movements, grassroots feminist organizations, anti-war activism and so on.

Course Description
As the extreme weather events emerge as one of the most prominent global risks, climate change and the accompanying natural disasters are no longer a side agenda, but play a critical role in maintaining sustainable societies and economies. This course offers a broader perspective on environmental issues, in addition to advancing the scientific knowledge of climate change and extreme weather. The course introduces the case studies that emphasize the huge implications of extreme events (e.g. drought, flood, heat waves, typhoon) and their linkage with the warming due to greenhouse gases. This course also assesses the potential impacts of climate changes and extremes on social, economic and environmental sustainability through a multidisciplinary approach.

Course Description
This course explores classical music and the ways in which it has been—and continues to be—reinvented over time. The course covers how different generations have deliberately or unconsciously chosen what to cherish or reject from the past. Whether it be composers altering their musical language to adhere to the political climate of their time, performers reinterpreting the “great works”, or the music industry repackaging ancient melodies for use in contemporary media, classical music figures in a vast social and cultural landscape that is in a constant state of change. This course examines the history and culture of classical music, focusing on the themes of innovation and tradition, in order to understand the social and cultural processes through which Western art music is made anew again, from the early modern era to the present.
