Course Description
Soil mechanics is a branch of engineering mechanics that describes the behavior of soils. It differs from fluid mechanics and solid mechanics in the sense that soils consist of a heterogeneous mixture of fluids (usually air and water) and particles (usually clay, silt, sand and gravel) but soil may also contain organic solids, liquids, and gasses and other matter. Along with rock mechanics, soil mechanics provides the theoretical basis for analysis in geotechnical engineering. Soil mechanics is used to analyze the deformations of and flow of fluids within natural and man-made structures that are supported on or made of soil, or structures that are buried in soils. Examples applications are building and bridge foundations, retaining walls, dams, and buried pipeline systems.

Course Description
This course surveys the variety of writing in English that is taking place around the world. In order to develop an appreciation of the range of writing in English, this course draws on different modes of literary expression such as novels, short stories, poems, and plays. Importantly, many of the texts chosen are those exploring aspects of cross-cultural, multilingual, or post-colonial experience – experiences which may resonate with the student experience of contemporary Hong Kong. In order to explore the richness of such experiences, this course draws on some relevant analytical approaches and literary theories.

Course Description
The course examines both conceptual and practical issues in interpersonal communication; verbal and non-verbal communication modes in two major domains: interpersonal relationships, including friendships, romantic relationships, and family communication patterns; as well as in the workplace, focusing on effective negotiation, management, and presentation skills. In each of these domains, students explore research on how communication modes vary as a function of factors such as gender, culture, and social status, as well as learning how to examine their own and others' communication styles. Assessment: midterm exam (20%), final exam (40%), tutorial assingments (30%), two short papers (5% each).

Course Description
This calculus-based course covers the basics of thermodynamics and kinetic theory. Problem solving and analytical skills are extensively used and are supplemented by numerical skills occasionally. Topics include: thermodynamic system, equilibrium state and its characterization; thermodynamic state function and equation of state and state transformation; first law of thermodynamics, adiabatic process, Carnot cycle; entropy and second law of thermodynamics; various thermodynamic potentials and their applications in phase equilibrium and mixtures; third law of thermodynamics and Nernst theorem. It also includes a discussion on kinetic theory.
