Course Description

This course is designed to develop the ability to analyze and critically evaluate arguments from a logical point of view. It provides a basic understanding of such concepts as reasons, implication, validity, and fallacies. It teaches the logical principles of deductive and inductive inferences and the techniques of applying them for determining the validity of arguments. Elements of good reasoning from an informal perspective are covered.

Course Description
This course examines how China has grown into the second largest economy in the world and how it has been integrated into the market-oriented global trade, investment and financial systems. The course introduces the dyanmics of China's evolving governance/growth model and its implications for the global economy, focusing particularly on the interactions between China's domestic reform and the opening of its trade, investment and financial sector. Topics include how cross-border trade and investment and decentralization of economic management to local governments turned China into a global manufacturing powerhouse, how investment in infrastructure and liberalization of product and input markets led to rapid urbanization, and how rapid growth created new challenges such as corruption, pollution, inequality, excessive debts, over-capacity, bubbles in property and financial markets, imbalance in trade, stress of US-China economic relations, and issues about macroeconomic management and RMB.

Course Description
This is a project-based course that offers a hands-on learning experience of the subject topics of robotics, perception and AI with applications in human-robot interaction. Students are required to first put together a workable mobile robotic manipulation platform using the provided mobile base and robotic arm, customized with perception sensing devices. Subsequently students use the mobile robotic manipulation system and the sensing devices to achieve perception and AI empowered real-world human-robot interaction with prescribed task objectives and scopes. Students work in small groups to study the hardware and learn the required ROS (Robot Operating System) software platform, understand the task requirements, work out feasible solutions, and accomplish the course project objectives. During the process, students acquire basic knowledge and practical skills of robotics, perception and AI.

Course Description
The course examines the growing integration of science and technology in our workplaces, the impact of science and technology on the direction of work, the workplace and even capitalism itself. The course investigates how science and technology have been key factors in shaping work since at least the beginning of factory production and generally explores the interactions between science, technology and work since that period. Students examine a range of topics and readings from history, sociology and anthropology of the workplace. This course also includes comparative discussions of science and technology as it is integrated into the workplace in industry as compared to the services.

Course Description
With dwindling energy resources, environmental impact of fossil fuel utilization and concerns on energy security, sustainability has gained increasing importance. In fact, modern society relies on stable and inexpensive energy supply and renewable energy is a significant component of the new energy mix. The course tackles energy conversion, utilization and storage for renewable technologies such as wind, solar, biomass, fuel cells and hybrid systems. Thermodynamics concepts, including the first law and the description of the various forms of energy, will form the basis for identifying, analyzing and modeling renewable energy systems. The course also touches upon the environmental consequences of energy conversion and how renewable energy systems can be used effectively to mitigate global climate change.

Course Description
This course offers a general introduction for students to the literary history of China from the late Qing and Republican periods, to the current state of Chinese literature. It is conducted chronologically and organized according to certain themes. After looking at general issues, certain literary thoughts and the works of selected writers are examined. Breaking the traditional 1949 division, the literature produced in the second half of the twentieth century, and the important scholarship in the field of modern Chinese literature are introduced. Assessment: 60% coursework, 40% examination.

Course Description
Computational approaches are becoming increasingly popular in the social sciences and in the humanities, and linguistics is no exception. Large databases, computer models and statistical analyses – to mention better-known research paradigms – allow revisits to long-debated issues in the field, such as how languages are born, change, compete or die. This course provides an overview of the available methods and of their application to sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, phonology, syntax and other fields. During the tutorials, students acquire basic skills in computational linguistics, such as extracting data from existing linguistic databases or modelling linguistic diversity.

This course is taken with LIFS2720, Biochemistry Lab. It explains the theories and concepts behind the chosen experimental sessions. This is a basic course introducing the underlying principles of essential biochemical techniques that have remained indispensable in experimental biochemistry.
