Course Description

This course examines the history of music-making in Japan from the 20th century onward. By considering genres such as Western classical music, jazz, and pop genres, as well as new innovations based on Japanese traditions, it considers how modernity and Westernization have influenced Japan’s musical culture. 

The course includes topics such as: School songs; Japanese composers in Western music idioms; Japanese pop music, etc. It also considers the intersections of music with questions of gender, politics and other societal issues.

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of Japanese linguistics. Starting with the position of Japanese linguistics within linguistics, the course introduces knowledge from a variety of fields, from phonetics and phonology to sociolinguistics, and develops the ability to analyze Japanese from a linguistic perspective.

Course Description

This course focuses on international refugee law and migration law, mainly in the realm of forced migration, as it is one of the pressing and large-scale challenges facing global society. The course introduces students to law, institutions, policies, practice, and contemporary debates concerning global refugee and migration governance. It adopts international law, international relations, and politics as general disciplinary frameworks.  

It is highly recommended (though not required) for students to have taken the courses on International Law I and II before registering for this course.

Course Description

This course presents Japanese traditional culture and health, through the practice of Bon Dance, or "Bon Odori." Bon Dance is a kind of dance performed at summer festivals in many parts of Japan. This dance features simple movements which represent a traditional sense of beauty; however, it is also a good cardio exercise. Each dance is introduced to the class through an explanation of the cultural and social significance of the dance to foster an understanding of the meanings behind some of the traditional movements.

This wrestling course is for beginners to learn basic movements as a recreational activity. It aims to build a body with high flexibility and endurance by incorporating stretching and aerobic exercises to absorb more oxygen.
