Course Description
The class introduces art history of Japan. The course looks at, thinks about and discusses works of art, or more broadly, visual culture, which have been historically and are currently associated with Japan. The main focus is what (if anything) is specifically Japanese about the making, appreciation and practice of visual culture from the past and present within and outside of Japan. In its application to Japanese culture, is such a national framework timeless or fluid, universally valid or variable, creatively fruitful or rather superficial? The class explores this set of large questions regarding various media of visual art, such as painting, graphic art, design, sculpture, calligraphy, ceramics, architecture, gardens, photography and manga through the following two venues: an introductory historical survey of the rise of new artistic tendencies of such a visual culture from the prehistoric period to the present within the current geopolitical territory of Japan, with some major considerations on how Japan's visual culture has interacted with the rest of the world over time; and a thematic approach, highlighting selected visual conventions in Japanese society across time that privilege certain materials, aesthetics, beliefs, and collecting and displaying customs, such as tea ceremony and Zen meditation.

Course Description
This course provides an overview of empirical political science as an introduction to important concepts, theories, methods, and findings in the discipline. While it is impossible to survey completely the broad field of political science, the course examines some of the major questions in political science and encourages critically thinking about the discipline's best answers to those questions. The course covers basic concepts relevant to the study of different types of political systems (such as democracy or sovereignty). Students explore the challenges of defining and measuring such concepts and review some historical understanding of these concepts. The course examines how political scientists assess causal relationships between social, economic and political variables

Course Description

This is a foundation course in the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies. In this course, the general frameworks, basic concepts, and historical backgrounds of gender studies are examined. The course describes and discusses gender research and analyses in various disciplines in order for students to obtain the basic analytical power in dealing with gender analysis in interdisciplinary fields. The course enhances students' understanding of how GSS develops in a respective field, what the current issues are, and what the future development might be, and helps them grasp the importance of the perspectives of gender, which is interdisciplinary. The course gives students an important tool to think deeply about the way the new "knowledge" opened up by the GSS should be and encourages them to transform the "knowledge" into actions, or activism in a broad sense.

Course Description
In order to motivate students to service-learning activities such as community service-learning, international service-learning or work camp, various activities of ICU, NGOs, community and international organizations are introduced, and prepare the students for meaningful service activities. Service-Learning in a single phrase can be summarized as an educational program which "links classroom knowledge with community service guided by reflection". Students apply their academic learning to actual service and also learn from the service experience. Service-Learning provides students with an opportunity to develop their insights to the real world and nurture sense of global citizenship, caring for others and responsibility. This course provides students with basic knowledge concerning service learning. Students also learn about various activities conducted by NGOs, local municipalities, and international organizations where students served in the past. This course requires 12 hours of service work (practicum) outside the campus in addition to class periods on Thursdays. Students' service work schedule will be arranged in a way that matches the needs of community organizations at which they serve. Students may not dictate to the organizations at what time on what day the organizations should host them.
