Course Description
This course provides an analysis of the theoretical and practical aspects of social policy and social development. Topics include the goals and scope of social policy and social development in comparison with economic policy; development of social welfare policy in the national and international arenas; social policy mechanisms for poverty reduction and enhancing equality; different development approaches; and analysis of the social policy system in social, political, and economic perspectives. Assessment: attendance and participation (20%), midterm (20%), lecture summary (20%), presentation (20%), written policy (20%).

Course Description
This course studies how pop culture has influenced the thought and behavior of societies in Britain and the United States from the 19th century to the present. It covers why pop culture emerges and how it relates to the changing social and political climate from that time period. It shows students theoretical approaches to definitions of popular culture and how to analyze their validity. Topics include Marxism, structuralism, semiology, hegemony and the role of the media, folk cultures in Britain and the United States, popular culture from the late 1920s and 1930s, blackface minstrelsy, racial constructs and jazz, the British class system, 1950s emergence of rock 'n' roll, 1960s and 1970s pop music and art as protest, youth subcultures in Britain and America, sports and the media, feminist approaches to pop culture, post modernism, and multiculturalism and globalization. Teaching methods include visual and audio aids including DVD excerpts, CDs, and computer downloads. Students are encouraged to express their opinions in discussions. Assessment: attendance and participation (20%), midterm (30%), final exam (50%).

Course Description

This course provides an interdisciplinary exploration of the social and political history of Thailand from pre-Ayutthaya (1351-1767) to the Thonburi/Bangkok period (1767-1782) to the modern nation-state of the present time. Emphasis is on the modern era when the country confronted western colonization, and its reactions from within, as well as a series of nationwide reforms, and the process of change and persistence of the nation-state up to the present.

Course Description
This course studies the different strands of economic thought and how they explain the structure and evolution of societies. Topics include the reach of political economy; impact of electoral laws on political parties; interactions of legislative, executive, bureaucracy, and courts; social choice; public finance and public economics; politics and macro-economics; democracy and capitalism; international relations and conflict; and economic methods in political economy. The final part of the course explores current world issues in political economy.

Course Description

This course examines the principles and fundamental theories of Thai dance. It also provides an introduction to the basic elements of Thai music, stylistic characters, and brief overview of the history of Thai music. Practical experience complements lectures to provide a better understanding of Thai dance and music culture and an appreciation of Thai cultural identities. The course culminates in a group public performance.

Course Description
The course studies the socioeconomic impact of disasters on the well-being of people and communities. The focus of the course is on major disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, landslides, fire, terrorism, and nuclear accidents. It provides an analysis of the hazards, risks, and roles and responsibilities of state and private agencies in responding to disasters and recovery work. Topics include early protection by social welfare measures such as social insurance; disaster education and financial planning; emergency center management with a focus on welfare provision; and rehabilitation programs for disaster victims and their communities after an incident.

Course Description
The course expands vocabulary, grammar, frequently used expressions, and basic Spanish structures necessary for developing an elementary level of communicative Spanish proficiency. Students learn to listen and speak about experiences and desires in various everyday life situations, read and write basic sentences, and are introduced to various aspects of the society and culture of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries.
