Course Description

The course provides a study of major school of thought, debates, and theoretical approaches in the discipline of international relations (IR). It discusses the main arguments and interventions of IR theories, the differences and similarities between them, and their accounts of such important concepts as state, anarchy, war, change, cooperation, capitalism, norms, identity, culture, order and justice and so on. It also puts IR theories into the intellectual context or the development of so-called ‘great debates’ since 1945.

Course Description
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to examine the concepts of expansion, empire, and frontier in British and American history and literature. The course focuses on how these concepts are constructed through imperial discourses and the impact on the cultural life of both Britain and America in the nineteenth century. It also covers the social, cultural, and political conditions that contributed to the rise and fall of the British Empire and the emergence of America as a superpower. Topics include early explorations and voyages, conflicts in the new world, slavery, American Independence, war, the British in India, the exploration and conquest of Africa, British colonialism in Southeast Asia, the American frontier, Victorian attitudes towards Empire, Ghandi and the Indian Independence, and African Independence. Texts: Joseph Conrad, HEART OF DARKNESS; John Smith, THE GENERALL HISTORIE; Rudyard Kipling, THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING. Assessment: attendance and participation (20%), term papers (35%), final exam (45%).

Course Description

This course introduces methods to analyze international and internal migration. The focus in on economic migrants, including trafficked people, and refugees. The causes of people movement and its consequences for the migrants and refugees and the destination countries are drawn up. Government policies on immigrants are examined from the viewpoint of advancing the economy, national security, satisfying public sentiment and obligations to international treaties. Comparisons between policies on immigrants in Southeast Asia and in Europe and North America are also discussed

Course Description
This course considers Britain's stance and role in the process of European integration, with particular attention on the question of why Britain has been reluctant to embrace European integration. Focus is on contemporary problems and prospects of closer British ties to the European Union and related bodies. Topics include the trajectory of European integration and Britain's role therein, major strains of Britain's foreign policy since the middle of the 20th century, the inter-relations and inter-dependencies between Britain and European politics, and different aspects of contemporary international politics. Assessment: midterm exam (40%), final exam (40%), attendance and participation (10%), response paper (10%).

Course Description
The course analyzes the social and cultural positions and representations of women and men in British and American literature. Issues addressed include power, self expression, rights movements, and aspects of alternative genders. The course provides an understanding of the traditional role of men and women as portrayed in 19th-century fiction through a detailed study of the works of Jane Austen and Henry James; the paradigm shift in attitudes to gender and sexuality that took place in western society during the 20th century; and of how contemporary literature reflects the profoundly different ways in which women and men relate to each other socially, economically, and culturally today. Topics include the representation of women and traditional gender roles in 19th-century British and American literature; the emergence of alternative genders and sexualities in 20th-century British and American literature; the altered social, economic and cultural positions of women and men in contemporary British and American literature. Assessment: classwork (10%), midterm (40%), and final exam (50%).

Course Description
The course examines twentieth century Britain and explores the changes that affected society during that time. Beginning with the Edwardian period of the early 1900s, the course traces the development of Britain through the various eras that characterized what was a tumultuous century both at home and abroad. While the issue of the class system is an important aspect of any history of modern Britain, the course covers how attitudes toward Empire, religion, politics, education, employment, regionalism, and nationalism evolved and fluctuated during the twentieth century. Topics include World War I, the 1920s, The Great Depression, World War II, the labor government and welfare state, the 1950s and political consensus, the 1960s and 1970s, and social and cultural changes during the Thatcher era.
