Course Description
In this course, students examine the ways in which Caribbean festivals and rituals provide understanding of Caribbean society and culture. The course emphasizes the element of masquerade and students consider how it relates to the historical narrative in the Caribbean and debates surrounding Caribbean identity. The course adopts a pan-Caribbean approach, which allows students to analyze a variety of traditional, community, religious, and national rituals and festivals as manifested within the region and the diaspora.

Course Description

The course provides a general introduction to the discipline of archaeology within a global framework, including its goals, basic theoretical principles, techniques, and its development. Emphasis is on the multi-disciplinary nature of archaeology, its relationships within the ‘parent’ disciplines of history and anthropology, and the range of sub-disciplines with archaeology itself. Students will become familiar with the numerous types of archaeologies that are available as potential career choices, as well as the scientific techniques and technological approaches used by different archaeological professionals. Most aspects of fieldwork (survey and excavation) and post-excavation analysis will also be examined.

Course Description

This course examines the basic nature of reasoning, and also focuses on fallacies which by their very nature obstruct good reasoning. In this respect, emphasis will be laid upon understanding the logical structure of argumentation which is important in recognizing the influence of emotional and rhetorical persuasion in everyday discourse and reasoning as well as in formal situations such as media presentations, political discussions, advertisements, general academic writings, etc.

Course Description
This course examines the idea of race and nationalism from a Cultural Studies perspective. Critical attention is placed on the intersection between discourses of race and nationalism and their linkages to global economic exploitation. he relationship between imperialism and the understanding of cultural sovereignty fashioned by the anti-colonial intelligentsia is a key feature and heavily discussed topic of the course. Additionally, emphasis is placed on the connection between the rise of both the modern state and the concept of race, as well as race as representation. Further consideration is given to the culture of colonialism, and the crucial impact of discourses of gender and sexuality on constructs of race and nation.

Course Description
This course investigates philosophical approaches to love, friendship, marriage, and eroticism in both classical and contemporary philosophy. It involves an investigation of the nature of sex, the nature of love, and the conceptual relationship between sexuality and love. Students also explore the concepts of gender and gender roles, and gender equality. They also look at social, ethical and legal controversies regarding sexual behavior, marriage, and privacy, and examine metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical queries.

This course offers a survey of the history of the Caribbean from the arrival of the Spaniards to modern times. Topics include: Amerindian civilization; settlement and conquest; sugar revolution; slave trade and slavery; war and trade in the 18th Century; the organization of sugar estates; government and politics in the English and French colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries; emancipation; immigration; the West Indian economy after emancipation; Crown colony government; the role of the US in the Caribbean; disturbances of the 1930s and their aftermath; diversification of the economy; and finally, federation, independence, and cultural readjustment in the 20th century.
