Course Description

In this course, students analyze the main physical and human characteristics of the continent and of contemporary Chile. Students gain a critical understanding of the changes and permanences in the geographical and physical and humane spaces of the continent and the conceptual grounds of the geographical spaces (landscape, territory, place, region, localization and scale) for its application into interdisciplinary research. Topics includes the physical geographical space of the Americas, regional synthesis of Chile, and the regional development of the country.

Course Description
This course provides a study of the basic structure of economies in urban settings. It explores the economic principles that underlie the inter- and intra- urban organization of economic activity, and examine the reasons why cities exist, their growth and decline, and the economic consequences of intervention in land and housing markets and urban areas. Topics covered include: spatial structure of urban economics; residential location theory; theories of the determination of the price and supply of demand; optimal city size; distribution of city sizes; models of urban growth; increasing returns and externalities; "new economic geography"; transport economics; environmental problems in Latin American cities; education and crime.

Course Description

In this course, students examine and integrate general biological and ecological concepts of marine mammals (with special emphasis on pinnipeds and cetaceans). Students characterize the different orders of marine mammals worldwide and identify the species present in Chile, identify and characterize adaptations of marine mammals to the aquatic environment, behavioral strategies, as well as the main research methodologies used in Chile. In the area of ​​conservation, the students examine the main current threats to marine mammals in Chile, measures of mitigation, institutions, and regulations related to management and administration, and become familiar with the application of methodological tools in the field of conservation of these species.
