Course Description
The course is divided into five sections. It begins by examining the medium of cinema, cinema as a form of public culture, and its debates and politics, before proceeding to study South Asian cinema and its issues. Under this section, the link between public culture and popular cinema, and its historical growth and transformation are analyzed. We look at the links between visual culture and its connections with larger political, economic and social forces. In the next four sections, we use conceptual tools, the medium of cinema, and other readings to critically understand and unpack South Asian societies and their contemporary issues. The objective of the course is to critically engage and analyze South Asian public cultures and societies that are represented, shaped, and produced by South Asian popular cinema and other internal and external forces associated with the medium of cinema.

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to gender and sexuality issues in Singapore from a historical perspective. It examines how our everyday understandings of gender have been formed in a long, complex process of negotiation over the twentieth century. In five themes 1) religion and marriage, 2) non-binary histories, 3) state morality, 4) queer stories and 5) gender troubles, it traces how state and religious authorities have shaped sexual behaviors and gender identities, with varying degrees of conformity and contestation from groups and individuals. Throughout history, gender remained fluid despite multiple attempts at restraining sexuality.
