Course Description

This course introduces the history of Hong Kong by focusing on its “fields”. It examines how various field sites (such as temples, museums, historical trails, and renovated historical buildings) could be used to understand the history of different places, events, and people in Hong Kong from the ancient period to the present. After a brief introduction to the historical development of Hong Kong, the course discusses aspects of rural Hong Kong history before moving on to urban Hong Kong. The last section of the course explains the diversity of Hong Kong’s communities, cultures, and religions. The course organizes several day trips to Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula, and the New Territories.

Course Description
This course explores theories and practices pertaining to urban sustainability. Urban sustainability is a state or process, in which urban development goals are met “while safeguarding Earth’s life-supporting system, on which the welfare of current and future generations depends” (Griggs et al. 2013:306). As the term sustainability becomes tremendously popular, its meaning is increasingly diluted; therefore, this course addresses sustainability at the very core if the problem. In this course, sustainability is not considered as simply a collection of social sustainability, economic sustainability, and environmental sustainability. Sustainability is a state or process, on which socio-economic development is built upon environmental integrity and constraints. This course focuses on the fundamental issue that gave rise to the notion of sustainability—the integrity or the Earth’s life-supporting system. It examines global and local environmental problems, as well as consequential socioeconomic issues, arising from urban development and continuous urban growth. It also explores existing and emerging approaches to urban sustainability. Throughout the course, students are challenged to contemplate on the relationship between human activities and nature, which is at the core the quest of urban sustainability.
