Course Description

This course examines subtitling in the context of Hong Kong's media and entertainment industry. Students will learn about the technical and creative aspects of subtitling, as well as the ethical and cultural considerations that are involved in this field. The course also includes practical assignments and workshops that allow students to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world scenarios. With consistent case-based analysis of contemporary audiovisual contents, platforms and creators, this course will showcase the latest convergence between professional and fan-based subtitling in the age of streaming. It is designated to prepare the students for their future accreditation by the AVT Pro certificate – the first and only professional accreditation for audiovisual translation.

Course Description
This course introduces the linkages between modern Europe, its historical foundations, and its various national identities. Issues of identity include history, politics, society, languages, religion, and culture (art, literature, music, film, etc.) from the ancient to contemporary periods. Each week the course concentrates on one country and asks what the major characteristics of national identity are; what Europeans have in common and what divides them; what the key moments are in the formation of modern European states; and what the major national trends are. Assessment: oral presentation and seminar participation (20%), research paper (30%), exam (50%).

Course Description

This course examines regulation of technological platforms, the different types of platforms and forms of technology, and the challenges brought by Artificial Intelligence. It covers how platforms are regulated in the fields of hate speech and obscenity, defamation, privacy and data protection, copyright, and political communication; and the limits of competition law in the regulation of platforms. The approach will be comparative, though particular reference will be made to the law of Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

Course Description
This course provides an introduction to the nature of international law and its historical development. Topics include sources of international law; the relationship between international and municipal law; the subjects of international law; the concept of sovereignty and state recognition; state jurisdiction; the acquisition and loss of territory; state responsibility; state succession; treaties and other international legal agreements; the pacific settlement of disputes; the use of force; international institutions; and human rights.
