Course Description

This intensive Spanish language and culture course is specifically geared for heritage language-learners who have bilingual communicative skills. It refines existing oral and written skills, while improving formal (linguistic/pragmatic) language proficiency. The course also takes advantage of students' immersion in Spanish life to incorporate intercultural learning and provide further context to the grammatical, lexical, and cultural content of the course. Assessment is based on essays, oral presentations, homework, a cultural blog, midterm and final exams, participation, and attendance. Texts: Alonso Raya, Rosario et al. This course provides a critical analysis of social problems and conflicts deriving from the characteristic processes of social restructuring and change in post-industrial societies and examines the major social problems that affect contemporary societies in a globalized world. It looks at the conceptualization and representation of social problems, including theoretical and methodological perspectives and the dynamics of the emergence, formation, and representation of problems. This course offers a study of the archaeological sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and nearby locations including Stabiae and Oplontis including their historical evolution and urban development. It examines structures and monuments such as walls, streets, hydraulic systems, temples, tombs, and domestic spaces, as well as archaeological material obtained during excavations. This course also analyzes ancient literary sources that testify the existence of these cities and reviews the history of their discovery, excavation, and conservation.

This course provides a critical analysis of the dynamics of growth and convergence of European economies from 1870 through 2005, and the contribution of the EEC-EU to monetary integration and macroeconomic stability in Western Europe. Other topics covered include: synchronicity of European business cycles over the long run; formation process of the European Economic Space in the 20th century: trade, capital flows, migration; the "economic constitutions" of Europe: from Rome 1957 through Maastricht 1991; impact of the EEC on the process of integration; origins and development of common policies: the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the Policy of Economic and Social Integration; monetary integration, nominal convergence and macroeconomic stability: from Bretton Woods (1958-1973) to the European Monetary System (1979-1992); creation of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), the Growth and Stability Pact, and the impact of the Euro on the process of integration. NOTE: This course is the same as HIST/ECON/EU ST 109 but taught in English
