Course Description
This course studies development of the complex organism from the fertilized egg, leading from the control of gene expression, to cell interaction, to the formation of tissues and organs. It considers the development of many types of animal and plant embryos and also post-embryonic process (control of growth, tissue maintenance, flowering, etc.). Major sections of the course include pattern formation (cell lineage, cell interaction); control of gene expression; genetic analysis of the nematode and in Drosophila (the oocyte, the embryo, and imaginal discs); mammalian development; and plant development. The course consists of lectures, laboratory practicals, small-group seminars, and data-analysis sessions.

Course Description

This course introduces students to techniques and tools in modern analysis which have important uses in a variety of areas of analysis, including the study of partial differential equations and Fourier analysis. Students achieve this in the context of linear analysis, introducing normed linear, inner product spaces and their completions, Banach and Hilbert spaces. The structure and geometry of these spaces are studied as well as continuous linear operators acting on them.

Course Description
This course provides you with thematic perspectives and methodologies of Visual Culture. You will develop an understanding of Critical and Cultural Theories and their relevance to art theory and practice. The course will show you how these discourses and techniques can be applied to vary our take on objects, ideas and experiences which we may otherwise conceive of as fixed. We will specifically focus on the radical questioning of conventional concepts of truth, value, unity and stability. This course provides routes to understand how disparate experiences come to form specific cultural paradigms that are interrelated with the production and reception of contemporary art. The framing of this course intends to give an up-to-date grounding in key arguments in Visual Culture and Critical and Cultural Theories of Contemporary Art in order to complement students' existing studio practice or study in another subject area.

Course Description
How can we conceptualize the inequalities of social class, generation, race, disability, and gender? How are such inequalities bought about through processes across the life course, from cradle to grave? This course makes the student familiar with the social structure and the institutional contexts across life courses and the corresponding social and public policies and other forms of social protection. The course focuses on policies and other forms of protection that are used to support human development and family formation, childhood and educational trajectories, vocational training, labor market entry, occupational careers and income trajectories, and retirement and ageing. The course takes the UK as its focus, although students are also encouraged to take a comparative perspective.

Course Description

Data is one of the most important assets of any enterprise and plays a central role in many aspects of everyday life, from healthcare, to education, to commerce. In order to be turned into meaningful information that enables and supports decision making, data must be stored, maintained, processed and analyzed. Database management systems are complex software programs that allow their users to perform these tasks in an efficient and reliable way. This course is an introduction to the principles underlying the design and implementation of relational databases and database management systems.

Course Description

This course focuses on ethical practice in the caring professions. Compassion in caring constitutes a key theme through the course. Starting from an overview of the philosophical foundations of professional ethics, students examine key debates around universality and context-dependence in professional ethics. The course explains how moral reasoning related to professional practice goes beyond the entirely rational and requires the capacity for empathic engagement with others. Students also apply the concept of professional wisdom to ethical practice. Through this exploration, students gain an awareness of their personal ethics and values. Particular ethical principles relating to care and treatment are explored, including beneficence, autonomy, self-determination, informed consent, confidentiality, human rights, dignity, respect and professional fidelity. Students will analyze the strengths and limitations of various professional ethical codes by applying them to complex ethical case studies. Ethical issues relating to the vulnerable service user/patient are examined, including ethical challenges in relation to capacity and decision-making in the context of mental health, dementia, end of life care, critical care, childhood and intellectual disability.

Course Description
The course gives an overview of major topics in current personality research. Historical personality theories are not covered. Primary focus is on trait theories of personality differences, but variability within individuals over time and across situations, assessment, development, genetic and environmental interplay, involvement in life outcomes, and cross-cultural patterns are also addressed. During the first six weeks, lectures introduce major theories, topics to be debated by the students, and a debating assessment. After that, sessions feature student debates on specified topics to build critical thinking, verbal expression, and argumentation skills. Students are also paired to debate assigned topics and write a summary defending a position taken.

Course Description
This course covers the following topics: Heat, Mass and Momentum Transfer. The fundamentals of heat, mass and momentum transfer are presented, including analogies between the transfer mechanisms for convective transfer and treatment of radiative heat transfer. On completion of this course, the student will be able to: - Identify and describe transport mechanisms for heat, mass and momentum, developing & solving models, appropriately simplified, which address transport phenomena and conservation laws, of physical transport problems (including with 1-D fluid flow) - Solve problems in turbulent transport using empirical approaches and the Chilton-Colburn analogy - Understand the phenomena of phase change and how this affects transport problems - Perform a preliminary heat exchanger design using Kern's method - Extend simple cases of heat transfer to include radiation and for fluid flow to use 2-parameter non-Newtonian models to obtain velocity profiles.
