Course Description
In this course, students study key writers, genres, and movements associated with modernism and the avant-garde in the early part of the 20th century, a period of crisis and revolution and intense experimentation with aesthetic form. Students are encouraged to read widely in order to understand the diversity of responses to modernity in the period, and lectures address the impact of a range of important cultural, political, and intellectual flashpoints (such as the Great War, the Russian Revolution, Irish Home Rule, the General Strike, the decline of empire, internationalism, women's suffrage, new discourses of sexuality, psychoanalysis, and the rise of fascism) as well as the specific features of the forms and genres through which writers have engaged with these issues.

Course Description

Students engage with the cultures and histories of Scotland through a multi-disciplinary perspectives offered by archaeology, Celtic languages, history, and literature all with the common question of how Scottish society has interacted with the outside world. Students consider how Scotland’s migratory, economic, intellectual, and cultural links overseas as well as its own distinctive experience of globalization influenced the development of a range of other societies while simultaneously transforming the country’s own domestic character and culture. This central theme of both influencing and being influenced by links with the outside world enables students to assess the global history of a non-US society in a multi-disciplinary way. In doing so, this course demonstrates how humanities-based disciplines explore the mutually influencing nature of the global, the national, and the local.

Course Description
The course focuses on various literary and cinematic depictions of the human search for identity and the meaning of self through a series of challenging texts and films from a variety of cultures. As the overarching theme of ‘Frontiers' suggests, the texts and films chosen for this course all share a focus on moments in which the individual is confronted by new frontiers, new borders, forcing a reappraisal of identity and selfhood. As always in Comparative Literature courses, the bringing together of the threads from the different texts and films is largely in the hands of the students, through discussion, and through comparative essays.

Course Description
This course allows students who may have studied works by Joyce in previous courses to reexamine them in relation to the rest of his career, from the short stories in DUBLINERS to his extraordinary experiments with language and representation in FINNEGANS WAKE. Students compare his work with contemporaries from Maupassant and George Moore to Virginia Woolf and Samuel Beckett. As well as placing his work in its literary contexts, the course also considers his engagement with historical and political questions, from Parnell's influence upon Irish history to the rise of fascism in Europe before the Second World War. Students are encouraged, although not required, to participate in the department's reading group devoted to FINNEGANS WAKE.

Course Description
Computational processes are increasingly being discovered in natural, social, and economic systems as well as typical silicon-based computing devices such as laptops and smartphones. For those with little or no previous computing education, this course develops the necessary understanding and thinking skills so that such systems can be viewed as predictable, understandable, and ultimately controllable. It is valuable in its own right, as an underpinning now required in many other disciplines, and as a foundation for further study in computing science.
