Course Description
This course provides a foundation for the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyze political problems. It introduces students to using empirical evidence to resolve central research questions across the discipline, and to the methods used to gather, analyse, and interpret data used in politics research. The course takes a hands-on and applied approach: students learn to explore contemporary politics research questions using real data. Students develop the skills to become independent researchers and present the findings of their research in writing and visually in reports. Students assess critically data and analyses produced by others and/or presented in media debate. The course is relevant for students on many different degree programmes and students with diverse academic backgrounds.

Course Description

In this course, students are expected to be familiar with ideas and concepts covered in the Adaptability and Wellbeing course units at first and second year levels at the University of Manchester. Topics to be covered include the role of illness and treatment beliefs in health care encounters, how medically unexplained conditions can be explained and managed, ways of improving how health care professionals and patients interact, and risk and decision making. Cutting across these topic areas are the themes of theoretical underpinnings, measurement, and application.

Course Description
This course introduces the way that banks, financial markets, and monetary policy work and interact in theory and practice. Students examine how bond and money markets operate and how interest rates behave. Students also look into some of the problems and dilemmas that central banks face in choosing appropriate policies and implementing them, both in normal times and during financial crises. Examples from financial newspapers and other sources are used to familiarize students with how theoretical concepts are used in practice. Topics include how interest rates behave in the bonds and money markets; the term structure of interest rates; theories of the demand for money and their implications; how the supply of money is created within the banking system; how central banks conduct monetary policy; and the various tools, targets, and goals employed in monetary policy.

Course Description
This course examines the sociology of work, considers the emergence of modern work, and assesses the nature of contemporary work and workplace organization. The course covers themes from rationalization, discipline, and workplace organization of time, to emotional labor, unemployment, domestic labor, and low-waged work in the global economy. The course considers both global trends and specific features of contemporary work, and contextualizes work in the movement from Fordist models of production to post-Fordist and globalized production.
