The aim of the course is to train students to be good interpreters for government organizations, enterprises and institutions, enterprises with foreign capital, joint ventures and wholly foreign owned enterprises, foreign affairs offices etc. and to do primary simultaneous interpreting as well as consecutive interpreting. This course uses a historical narrative—with an introductory text and lectures—to survey the history of Buddhism from the origin to the rise of major forms of Buddhism in India and further developments in Southeast Asia, East Asia, and the Tibetan cultural regions. Reading assignment will balance primary sources from the key moments of Buddhist history and thought and secondary scholarship. A major theme that we keep coming back to will be the development of Buddhist philosophy and theology as represented by major schools of In- dian, Chinese, and Tibetan Buddhism. The course will also introduce students to wider facets of Asian Buddhist cultures by looking at aspects of Buddhist scriptures, literature, art, ritual and meditation, translation, and other cultural practices. The course is designed to help students sharpen their academic skills in reading, critical thinking, and creative writing and to prepare them for more advanced work in Buddhist studies, Buddhist philosophy, and religious studies.

This course provides a detailed, vivid introduction to the origin and main unique features of Chinese traditional culture with a focus on its distinctive artistic charms. It also presents an overview of the spirit and core values of Chinese culture from a philosophical perspective with an attempt to exemplify the inner mind, cultural character, the life views and aesthetic interests of the Chinese people. The overall aim of the course is to promote a broader and deeper understanding of the charms of Chinese arts and Chinese culture, which are often characterized as “suggestive but not articulate.” Though focusing on Chinese traditional culture, this course is also of important relevance to students today both in China and abroad since the profound world of meaning imbedded in Chinese ancient culture and arts still holds an essential key to a better understanding of the essence of contemporary Chinese culture.
