Course Description
This seminar explores the theatre of the Caribbean area and its complex affiliation to West African theatre and ancestral performing arts traditions. This includes the politics of representation of a theatre genuinely related to a people's consciousness, the dynamics of creolization at work in the language(s) of the plays, and the recourse to an increasingly self-reflexive dramaturgy. The seminar features a range of plays in both English and French from the mid-1930s to the 1980s, including plays by C.L.R. James, Derek Walcott, Aimé Césaire, Édouard Glissant, Wole Soyinka, Maryse Condé, Errol Hill, Earl Lovelace, Michael Gilkes, Sylvia Wynter, and Trevor Rhone.

Course Description
This course studies examples of how corporations can define universal human rights standards for their industry, enforce these standards, and remedy violations of these standards. It also discusses how corporations can communicate their practical and sustained action to consumers and investors. The course covers the United Nations Human Rights Council's Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The Guiding Principles (GPs) establish an authoritative global standard on the respective roles of businesses and governments in helping ensure that companies respect human rights in their own operations and through their business relationships. Corporations need to figure out what their commitment to respect Human Rights implies in practice and how they can systematically build respect for Human Rights into their daily business operations.

Course Description
Based on International Relations theories, this course looks at the origin of conflicts and cooperation within the international system. It explores the following: the factors which lead States into war; the links between political systems–for example democracy–and the risk of international conflicts; the reasons behind the increase in the number of civil wars; the interdependent sources and the conflicts in the economic, financial, and development areas. The course analyzes how the international institutions promote friendly relations between nations and the definition of common rules, what are the results of international negotiations, and why international law becomes more and more important in contemporary international relations. The course proposes different explanations to these developments. It looks at the distribution of power, the presence of international organizations, and the importance of interior policy as it relates to the exterior policy of a State. The course is divided into four parts. The first discusses the vast paradigm that is the analysis of international relations. The second focuses on international conflicts, the third analyzes the policy of international economic relations, and the fourth discusses transnational relations.

Course Description

The course is an introduction to some of the major economic and development issues that international organizations deal with. It provides some key factual, methodological, and analytical elements that contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of the current work of international organizations and the underlying policy debates and motivations. Each lecture treats a specific topic that is part of the post-2015 Development Agenda adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). Each lecture is organized in three parts, starting with a series of well-established stylized facts. These facts are then used to illustrate a crucial methodological and conceptual issue related to the topic treated. The last part of the lecture is dedicated to a deeper analysis that reflects ongoing policy debates.
