Course Description
This course examines the function of imagination in our appreciation of music. Through a series of case studies the course explores music's ability to evoke different voices, to negotiate between real and imaginary worlds, to move back and forwards through time, and to engage our imaginations. It considers the critical strategies of historical commentators and modern scholars as well as our own responses, aiming to understand how music works in relation to other arts, and the meanings that emerge from the gap between music and its texts.

Course Description
This course shows how molecular biology is steadily revealing the mechanisms of previously intractable problems, for example, control of gene expression. Topics include gene expression in bacteria (integrated control networks, two component signal transduction systems); transcriptional regulation in higher organisms and molecular techniques for studying gene function (the pre-initiation complex, signals that activate transcription factors, DNA cloning, and complementation techniques for identifying DNA-protein and protein-protein interactions); chromatin structure and gene expression; gene regulation and function in vivo; post transcriptional and translational control of gene expression (RNA splicing, RNA editing and mRNA stability); examples of alternative splicing; and protein synthesis (mechanisms and regulation of translation).

Course Description

This course engages with some of the key theories that explore how language and social interaction underpin organizational life. It draws on an interdisciplinary research field to interrogate the unique properties of "organizational discourse" and "institutional talk." The course is structured around studies of organizational texts (e.g. recruitment brochures, mission statements, websites, and adverts), as well as studies of social interaction in organizational settings (e.g. business meetings, call centers, healthcare delivery, and sales encounters).

Course Description
Intellectual property law consists in the rules determining when, and subject to what conditions, the activity of producing information (broadly conceived) can generate rights to exclude others from access to information. Unlike the physical objects associated with real property rights intangibles are non-rival and non-excludable. While it often takes creativity, effort, and investment to produce them, intangibles may be easily copied. To restrict this copying and thereby encourage the production of information, the law intervenes by establishing intellectual property rights around certain valuable intangibles – creative works like books, paintings, and songs; inventions ranging from vaccines to the bag-less vacuum cleaner; and valuable brands like Coke or Google. The course adopts a thematic approach to develop the skills required to engage with the mechanics of each branch of intellectual property law (copyright, patents, and trademarks). To that end, the course is structured around a strong theme that runs persistently through all parts of IP law.

Course Description
This course examines the ideas that both audiences and filmmakers commonly use to discuss documentaries. Each week students examine a single film whose construction highlights a particular issue, and discuss it in conjunction with a selected written text. The ideas examined fall into three related groups. The first is that of the development of documentary: What is documentary? How have the ideals of documentary changed over its history? What has been the role of technology in the development of documentary? The second is that of the filming process: What are the limits of what can be filmed? What happens when people know they are being filmed? What kinds of performance are acceptable and even necessary? Can truthfulness ever be established? The third is that of our own experience and expectations as audiences: What kinds of construction or even manipulation do we want in order to make factual footage comprehensible? Can we cope with ambiguities? What do we want from photographs, moving images, and recorded sounds? What happens when we see and hear exceptional or traumatic events through documentary? On the way students meet hopeless alcoholics, gangster rappers, London firemen, and reactions to 9/11.
