The first part of the course examines the links between energy systems and social and economic models of our societies. It then explores the current energy transition dynamic and assesses its perspectives and impacts by studying different scales. The last part of the course addresses the ongoing changes in energy geopolitics and their links with climate issues.

Course Description
This course covers Russian diplomacy after the collapse and breakup of the Soviet Union. The following topics are covered: the failed attempts of Russia to approach with the West during the Yeltsin presidency and the first years of the Putin presidency; Putin's ambitious and robust foreign policy and reestablishment of the tradition of a proud, strong, and powerful country; reaffirmation of the military power and thirst of recognition; path to becoming an indispensable partner in the major international questions (disarmament, Eastern Europe, Middle-East, Iran); recovering of its exclusive influence in the former USSR countries (Ukraine, Caucasus); reorientation of its attention towards the Asia-Pacific region, especially with China; access to the Mediterranean and the Pacific; containing of the role of the OSCE and limitation of the influence of the EU in Eastern Europe. The means of action that led this ambitious foreign policy are ideological and political, diplomatic and multilateral, economic, security, software and influence. The use of these means, which are always well coordinated, is guided by the Russian national interests, legacy of USSR or even the Russian Empire. More than obeying to a predetermined strategy, they react often to internal or external political impulses or simply depend on the president's will. The limitations of financial and economic resources of the country, due to the fall of the gas and oil prices, the world economic crises and Western sanctions, never concerned the budget and human resources of the Russian diplomacy.

Course Description
This course invites students to reflect on ethical questions (e.g., accountability, transparency, serving the common good vs. serving oneself) in the conduct and practices of elected officials in liberal democracies. The approach relies on a few classical texts of political science while many examples drawn from contemporary democratic politics are also examined. The overall objective of this course is to encourage students to develop their critical thinking on the nature of power and on what democratic ethics means today, with a view to the future of democracy in general and the future of the quality of democracy in particular.

Course Description
The course considers the role of technological changes in shaping social, political, and economic patterns throughout the history. Technical change or Schumpeterian process of disruptive innovation is an integral part of development process. However, the technological changes, by creating new economic rents, mobilize and reallocate resources within and across the economies. This creates massive disruption in distribution of income and employment within the societies. In the past few years, there is growing concern about high frequency technological changes and their disruptive impacts. New technologies, such as AI and automation, and new business models such as Uber are often blamed for increasing the prevalence of economic insecurity. This course studies the disruptive consequences of technological change on inequality, immigration, and employment. Furthermore, The course studies the interaction of technological change and institutions. The course intends to foster a better understanding of multidimensional policy design that could empower society to face and adjust to the disruptive impacts of high frequency technological changes of today and tomorrow. This course also provides students with the opportunity to improve their analytical skills that help them to read scientific papers and do professional policy analysis.

Course Description
The course is an overview of how economic thought has risen over the centuries, and how, since World War II, it has influenced neighboring disciplines such as political philosophy, common law, political science, sociology, and psychology. This course covers globalization, free trade, growth and its possible end, the crisis, and inequalities. From Gilgamesh and Aristotle to neuroeconomics and high-frequency trading, from Tolkien's Sauron to Martin's Littlefinger, this course contextualizes contemporary debates and underlines how economics' “way of thinking” is now the dominant scheme in our lives, whether it is at individual, societal, or planetary levels.
