Course Description
This seminar addresses the possibly complicated relationships between war and cinema: films used as a means to prepare war and then to wage it; warlike phenomenon as it is actually described (or not) in movies; cinema used to (try to) tell about what war is for the combatants and for the civilians who endure it, and/or on the home front; relationships between films and the memory(ies) of war. Whilst wars of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries are the primary focus of the seminar, incursions in a wider chronology occur occasionally in the course. The work is based on the study of movies: screenplays, directors, and actors; context of production and of financing; nature (fiction or documentary); content (plot, main characters, stylistic choices, possible messages); reception; situation in the history and the memory of the warlike phenomenon. Some more in-depth and more critical analyses of specific scenes are strongly encouraged. The course occasionally uses series and also relies on the books from which some of the films were made. For example: ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, CAPITAINE CONAN, LA CHAMBRE DES OFFICIERS, ARMY OF SHADOWS, THE RAILWAY MAN, THE SILENCE OF THE SEA, SUITE FRANCAISE, HEART OF DARKNESS (FOR APOCALYPSE NOW).

Course Description
This seminar explores seafaring, contacts between civilizations, and the rise and fall of some civilizations that can be linked to the seas. The course also explores how such multiple layers of history help to create a possible European civilization. This first step is to understand the journey realized, from the fears of the unknown to the will to control all the world. As our oceans are the earth's largest habitats, for some civilizations, controlling the seas was a way to control the world and control of the maritime domain (borders, ports, and offshores installations) still remains a sovereign power for nations. Furthermore, playing a key role in the climate system, Oceans contain valuable resources such as oil, natural gas, and minerals and they are also homing futures, promising strategic elements such as platinum group metals, steel stabilizers, high-tech metals, and rare earth elements. The EU appears to be a key actor regarding all these topics. Part of its future depend on its ability to deploy, develop, and manage programs, relations and capacities to use and preserve seas and oceans. This seminar helps to identify the most important trends, challenges, and opportunities for practitioners, decision-makers, from the world's seas and oceans. It focuses on the following areas: resources and economic potential of the sea; imaginaries bounded to the seas; environmental issues governance of the sea.

Course Description
The purpose of this course is first to develop attention to public diplomacy and, secondly, to think of how public diplomacy could be seen as a way of increasing connections among people in order to shape perceptions and to change people's mind. Seen from China, Australia, or USA, Europe seems to be a unique political structure with an elaborated decision-making's chain. Yet, seen from the EU, the perception is quite different. The EU as a multi-level political object, with different scales of states (from Malta or Luxembourg to Germany), has a quite unique position to disseminate several stories involving joint goals for rallying the world to its norms and values. The course raises questions regarding a common army (hard power), culture (soft power), or other components of the European way or leadership in the world.

The course studies how the financial system functions and how it interacts with the broader economy. Students then learn what the principal actors of financial crisis management–central banks–do and how and their mandates evolved in response to crises. Among others, the course studies the Great Depression, Japan's Lost Decade, Zimbabwe's hyperinflation, the 2007-2009 subprime crisis, and the European sovereign debt crisis. This offers an opportunity to discuss issues regarding the regulation of the financial system and the welfare costs of financial crises.

Course Description
This course helps students develop an advanced perspective on how firms make investment and financing decisions. It covers the three main aspects of modern corporate finance: capital budgeting, financing, and capital structure. Capital budgeting concerns how a firm makes investment decisions to increase its value. The course applies the fundamental concept of time value of money to capital budgeting decisions. The course introduces different investment decision criteria and illustrates the calculation of free cash flow. The course then studies firm's financing options, equity and debt. For equity market, several stock valuation methods are discussed in detail. For debt market, general bond valuation method and corporate bonds are covered. The last part of the course combines equity and debt together to develop the concept of weighted average cost of capital, which links a firm's capital budgeting decision with its financing decision.
