Planning and urban management systems vary considerably internationally. Differences in history, culture, ideology, law, economy, and society mean that there are significant differences in planning policies, planning law, and ultimately in the outcomes of planning systems. This course gives students an appreciation of how different planning systems operate. Given the number and variety of planning systems, only a selection of examples is examined by some guest speakers. In addition to the analysis of a selection of countries the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP) is also examined.

This course covers management, procurement, and development. It examines the theories and ideas that underpin planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the use of resources over time. Topics include the principles of management, organizational development, basic finance, costing, development feasibility, valuation theory, and quantitative analysis relevant to the construction industry.

This course introduces basic concepts of landscape design as it relates to urban forestry. It discusses the states of design, from site analysis, to conceptual drawings, design drawings, and some basic aspects of construction drawings. This course explores the history of landscape design and how it relates to the discipline of urban forestry.
