Course Description
In this course students become familiar with the literature and theoretical concepts dominating the academic debate about green growth, low-carbon development, and social inclusiveness. The course studies examples from China and India, looking at the factors that shape processes of social inclusiveness and of the greening of the economy. Both China and India offer interesting perspectives on how rapidly developing countries, which have displayed high economic growth rates over the last decade, deal with environmental pollution and climate change on the one hand and with social inequality on the other. The seminar imparts the analytical skills needed to effectively research policies and politics related to inclusive low-carbon development. It reflects upon scientific literature on these issues and discusses adequate theoretical starting points for empirical research. Furthermore, students research the key facts and figures and conduct small illustrative case studies in order to identify influential factors in this field.

Course Description
The course has three themes: introduction to the development discourse; aid and conditionality; and development in practice. In the first theme the book DEVELOPMENT AS FREEDOM by Amartya Sen and several articles introduce students to some of the most important problems and discussions about development. The relationship between development and democracy is studied. In theme two, development and democracy are analyzed in connection with aid based on William Easterly's book THE WHITE MAN'S BURDEN and a number of articles. Within this theme there is a focus on aid policies, and the creation of democracy in development states and specifically on democracy in Africa. The last theme is development in practice; a section planned to study development through specific regional cases that allow us to understand some of the problems and possibilities it faces. It includes specific initiatives aimed to deal with the most pressing problems in the field while discussing the ways in which such challenges and programs can be further analyzed and theorized. The course consists of three themes that are derived from three connected dimensions of the relations between the exercise of state power and various identities and forms of organization in society in different regions in the global south: i) development, ii) democracy, iii) political identities. The first course theme addresses different perspectives on economic and social development and underdevelopment, with special attention paid to the role of the state in shaping these processes. The second theme discusses forms of political rule and introduces different explanations of democracy and authoritarian rule. The theme also discusses theories of how these forms of political rule are related to levels of development. The third theme discusses how different political identities are connected to the organization of political institutions. This theme pays special attention to the question of how national identities are linked to other political identities based on gender, class, ethnicity and religion, how identities affect and are affected by the organization of state institutions, and how this in turn is linked to issues of conflict and stability.

Course Description

Position with a member of the Irish parliament or with a nongovernmental organization affiliated with the EU government. The internship is an officially authorized program working within the Irish Houses of Parliament: the Dail and the Senate. It is governed by the House Committee on Procedures and Privileges. Interns have the status of adjunct staff. Work in parliament is subject to conditions laid down by the Committee on Procedures and Privileges covering such matters as access to facilities, dress code, dealings with press and televised media etc. Each intern is part of a small staff: Irish parliamentarians commonly have a staff complement of just one or two. Interns are expected to work between two and three days per week. The nature of the work varies greatly but can be summarized as either administration or research. Typically a student will undertake some combination of these research and administration tasks. Throughout the internship, students are required to give an account of progress to the program director.

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the law and practice of international dispute settlement. The course begins with an introduction to the obligation to settle international disputes peacefully and an overview of the fundamental principles of dispute settlement. The course then explores the non-judicial means of dispute settlement: negotiation, mediation, good offices, inquiry, and conciliation. Thereafter, the course focuses on the judicial settlement of disputes by international courts and tribunals, in particular the International Court of Justice, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea dispute settlement mechanisms, the dispute settlement procedures and mechanisms of the World Trade Organization, and arbitral tribunals in both inter-State and investor-State disputes. The course concludes by addressing select issues related to international dispute settlement, namely provisional measures, landmark cases (such as the South China Sea arbitration), and contemporary issues such as compliance with judicial and arbitral decisions, and the politics of international investment law. Throughout the course, not only the “law,” but also the “politics” of dispute settlement are addressed.

Course Description
The French notion of “secularism” (or laïcité) is one of the most original aspects of the political, social and cultural reality of France. We speak of "laïcité à la française" to designate a certain type of relationship between the public political sphere and the status of religion(s). Through history, these relationships have been marked by distance and, sometimes, by a dimension of struggle and direct confrontation. Religions tend to be reduced to the private sphere. The “ideal” is that religions must in no way influence political life or even public and cultural life. The French adventure of secularism was thus founded on the project of radically separating politics and religion. This adventure began as early as the sixteenth century and was often confrontational. Secularism has mainly concerned relations between the state and the Catholic religion. But, today, the question arises in a new context marked by the development of Islam. This course is mainly a history class but it is also intended to shed light on contemporary issues and debates. It's about understanding the current issue of secularism through its long history. The following topics are discussed: the impact of the wars of religion (sixteenth century), the place of the Catholic Church in the Ancien Régime, the formulation of the idea of secularism in the Age of Enlightenment, the installation of a "model" of modern secularism under the Modern Republic, the existence of a "culture" of anticlericalism, the school quarrel, the new situation posed by the rise of Islam since the years 1970 and the idea of a crisis of secularism today (new or “post” laïcité).

Course Description

Film, literature, and the arts have always played a central role in reflecting the attitudes towards the twin ideologies of Nazism and Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. They were central to propagandizing these ideologies and building their strength after World War I. However, they also provided the most vibrant forum for those challenging the totalitarian regimes established by Nazis and Communists. In the period since their fall, politics and academia have frequently failed to enable an accessible debate on their legacy. Thus, film and literature remain the site of a debate. This course explores the theme in a multi-disciplinary manner, drawing on history, political science, literature, film studies, and psychology. A thematical, rather than chronological, approach was selected to emphasize the occurrence of the examined issues across regions and times, using different methods of exploration. As Prague is one of the few capitals that experienced liberal democracy, Nazism, Communism, and a return to liberal democracy over the scope of slightly more than 50 years, first-hand experience through field trips and guest speakers is incorporated into the course to enhance understanding of the topic.
