Internships

The location of Canberra makes it possible to intern at major national institutions, government departments, research centers, think tanks, and international embassies through the Australian National Internship Program. Internships on this program are research-based. The research project will result in a report that your host will use for briefings, published works, and informing speeches or policy.

You can also take an internship outside of Canberra and apply for a travel grant through Australia National University. Eligibility for the grant is advised after application.

CURRENT INTERNSHIP COURSES

You will apply for the Australian National Internship Program. Admission to the program is managed with an application and interview process that is completed prior to the start of your semester abroad. If successful, you will enroll in an internship course (ANIP A or ANIP B).

Arrangements

The internship is arranged with support from the host university after you apply to the program. In your host university application, you will indicate your desire for an internship and complete an application to enroll in the internship course. Placement will be based on your prior academic studies, personal goals, and an informal online interview.

Internships are highly sought after, and it is recommended that you begin the application process as soon as possible—at least two months before you arrive. If you are successful, you will be enrolled in the internship course after you arrive.
