Dates and Eligibility

Program requirements are about helping you find your best match in a new academic setting abroad. As a University of California (UC) program, requirements are carefully set to ensure you can access as many programs as possible. At the same time, eligibility will help you narrow the choices and find a program where you can succeed and thrive. Here’s some basic criteria to start.

Are you…

  • a registered, UC student?
  • in good academic standing?

If you answered yes to both of these questions—good news! You meet the qualifications to apply to UCEAP. If you are unsure about some of these questions, check in with your advisor on campus.

Requirements

The following are minimum requirements to participate in this program. Some requirements are set by the host country, the host university, or third-party providers. Most requirements must be met at the time you apply. However, you have until departure to meet class level and most language requirements. If you have questions, a study abroad advisor on campus can help.

Class Level
Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Graduate
Minimum GPA
2.75
Prerequisite Courses
None
Eligible Majors
All UC majors welcome
Language Prerequisite

Review the program’s Academic page on the UCEAP website. Confirm this program offers courses you’re seeking to take, and that the courses are taught in a language you can understand.

The university might not offer courses in the subject you’re looking for. For example, the University of Barcelona does not offer degrees in Anthropology, Global Studies, International Relations, International Studies.

Courses in Business Administration, International Business, and Economics are highly impacted. While course offerings may be numerous in those subjects, you may not be able to get into them.

Courses taught in English are very limited or unavailable in Art History, Environmental Studies, History, Political Science, and Sociology.

Engineering courses taught in English are very limited outside of Biomedical Engineering.

Make a tentative course plan! While the university does offer courses in English, not all courses are taught in English. If you do not have Spanish language skills equivalent to the completion of the intermediate level of the language, you may only be able to select from the courses offered in English. Check to make sure the courses offered in English meet your needs. Also, make sure you have plenty of back-up course options in case the courses you’re most interested in are unavailable.
