Course Description

With systematic teaching, we will help the students to learn the basic changing clues and major issues of 1200 years between Sui Dynasty in ancient China and Opium War, as well as the necessary historical knowledge of politic, economic, institution, culture, nationality and other aspects of this period; moreover to help the students to learn the basic method of historical research, the important academic works, famous experts and the latest academic trends; to train their professional awareness, and to lay the foundation for further study of the various dynastic histories and history of particular subjects, as well as the research and practice of the fields. By a variety of interactive forms of lecture, assignment and discussion, to develop students` humanistic spirits and inventiveness.

Course Description
This course explores key features of Chinese society and their applications to Chinese business culture from a sociological perspective. It begins with a comparative analysis about the structural differences between the Chinese and Western societies and moves on to discuss the social, economic, and cultural implications of such differences. Course Description

This course is a practical course for Peking University undergraduates to carry out social science research based on social survey. It emphasizes theoretical insights, cutting-edge methods and practices. Through an integrated and panoramic perspective, Peking University students are trained to engage in high level social science research. The course consists of three parts: survey methods, social topics and practice. The survey method section takes two national social survey projects, CFPS and CHARLS, as examples, so that students can master professional knowledge such as questionnaire design, sampling, and survey implementation, and improve their research feelings and comprehensive analysis ability on Chinese social issues. The social topic section includes six major research fields of economy, population, family, retirement, religion and health. Each field selects several classic studies published in top international journals based on CFPS and CHARLS data, combined with relevant empirical research methods, through explanation and demonstration, guide and improve students' research ability to analyze social issues with scientific methods and paths. The practical part allows students to learn and experience the way of thinking and basic methods of social research in real social situations by leading students to experience the real process of social survey.

Course Description

Recent decades have witnessed China’s rapid growth and its massive infrastructure finance in the developing world. This brought a new round of discussion on what development is. How should we understand development policy in the context of a changing world order? This course provides students with the historical, political, economic, and institutional context to understand international development policy. The course aims to give students exposure to on- going policy debates on international development as well as the conceptual and theoretical framework to understand development issues. The course allows students to discuss and explore China’s changing role in international development and its impact on regional and international orders. Topics to be covered include (but not limited to): history of development, industrialization, poverty reduction, aid and development finance, energy and environment, international development institutions, South-South cooperation, and China and global development order.
