Course Description

This course will invite famous novelists and new writers at home and abroad to give lectures or a series of lectures, which will be open to all students in the form of elective courses. Three to seven writers will be invited for the course. The invited writers are expected not only to be highly established, original and representative, but also to have deep theoretical thinking in fiction. Through this course, novelists share their creative experience with students, introduce their creative theories and experiences, stimulate their creative enthusiasm, and encourage and guide their writing and communication. At the same time, it can also cultivate students' sentiment and achieve the good purpose of aesthetic education.

Course Description
This course is an introduction to contemporary political system of China, with a special focus on the policy making process in contemporary China. The emphasis is on China's political structure, state and society relations. This course provides background on major political events in modern China, and then investigates the current political issues in China today—environmental civil society activity, problems and benefits associated with continuing economic liberalization, and discourse from within the CCP on political reform. The "Selected Readings of Ancient Chinese" course is a preliminary course for international undergraduate students studying ancient Chinese in the Chinese Department. Course Description

This course is intended to give a panoramic view of contemporary China. The topics are restricted to different aspects of the status-quo of China, including people and nationalities, food and cuisines, languages and dialects, festivals and traditions, marriage and family, leisure and entertainment, arts and sports, traffic and transport, travel and world heritage, natural resources and environment protection, mass media and publication, education and research, politics and government, religions and beliefs, information technology and internet, cities and countryside. Each topic is framed into 10 to 15 questions and presented in an easily accessible way with statistic figures, stories, pictures and video clips from different sources in order to ensure objectivity. The aim of the course is to offer a panoramic view of contemporary China in the selected aspects and help understand the variety and diversity of contemporary Chinese society.

Course Description
Starting from biological and physiological perspectives, the lectures are based on the biological significance of the sexual differentiation and the mode of human reproduction. The instructors first briefly introduce the characteristics and evolution of human sexuality, and then go into details about the basic structure and function of the reproductive organs, the biological and physiological basis of the gonadal function and its adjustment and control, human fertilization, embryo genesis, fertility, sexual development and differentiation, and the knowledge and problems about biology and physiology of adolescence. Other fundamentals, such as the human genetic diseases, sexual health and sexually transmitted diseases, e.g. the prevention and control of AIDS, are also covered. Assessment: Report (10%), final (90%).

Course Description
This course is an introduction to Buddhist thought, its Indian origins, and all three scriptural traditions including Southeast Asian Pali, East Asian Chinese, and Central Asian Tibetan. It explores the basics of Buddhist philosophy, religious doctrine, religious practices such as meditation, and Buddhism as an institutional religion in a Buddhist community. The course touches on the function and role of the Buddhist monastery in traditional Buddhist society and studies Buddhism both as a textual-philosophical tradition and a live religion. Other topics include early Buddhism's doctrines of non-substance and dependant-arising, Mahayana physical concepts of emptiness, conceptualization only, Buddhist ideas of knowledge and cognition, comparing the soteriological projects between Hinayana and Mahayana, and others. In our daily life, people often tell friends, peers, family of their distress before they tell professional counselors. Peer counseling is such a special kind of psychological counseling, conducted by trained or supervised unprofessional people, providing helps having some counseling effects. In this process, through the use of active listening and problem solving skills combining knowledge about human development and mental health, peer counselors instruct their companions and provide them with psychological and emotional support In this course, the basic concept, skills and ethic of peer counseling will be introduced, as well as some practical problems such as culture, race, sexual orientation and romantic relationship.
