Course Description

This course studies the great Latin American figures from cultural and political history. The course is conducted in Spanish and French with an emphasis on translating and transcribing texts between both languages. The course focuses on how heroes stand between myth and reality, and how they relate to the individual and the collective. It analyzes the processes of heroization carried out since the Latin American independences to highlight the ruptures and continuities in their contemporary political uses.  Written sources, territorial marks, and iconography constitute the main materials used to approach heroic cults from a critical perspective.

Course Description

This course provides an overview of empirical, analytical, and theoretical knowledge on the interaction between Islam and the notions of state and power. The course combines historical, sociological, and anthropological approaches in order to provide students with a concrete knowledge of Islam as a religion and as a matrix of a series of political thoughts that are both sophisticated and different from Western European and North American models. Through practical and empirical case studies, the course engages an advanced reflection on the theoretical models and systematic political rationalities carried by ideologies driven by the values and history of Islam.

Course Description
This course gives students keys to understand the contemporary international pop-culture, its sources, stereotypes, typical scenarios, stories, characters and the role of Europe, USA, and Japan in shaping it. It focuses on the mutual influences between video games, comics, animation, movies, TV shows, and novels. The conceptual background is pragmatic sociology and ethnology. The ethnological conception of culture is key, though the class does not focus on theory. The class first presents a typology of medias and imaginaries of pop-culture. In the second part, it offers a selective history of pop-culture focusing on the emergence of the elements that now form the mainstream pop-culture.
