Course Description
This seminar introduces students to law from another prospective: law as narrated in books. Indeed, the legislator, as the writer, is capable of creating a reality. Within the law and literature relationship, many nuances of the law can be captured which help to better understand the juridical world, especially through two opposite legal theories: formalism and legal realism. The seminar helps students to understand law that exists also outside of the codes–in the reality of the fiction. Presenting law through literature is an exercise for future lawyers to predict and interpret many facets of reality. Dickens, Kafka, Sophocles, and Euripides presented characters dealing with different aspects of the law: justice, punishment, guilt, authority. This course invites the students to consider imagination and representation of the law and helps them to imagine, represent, predict, and interpret the world and the law within which they live.

Course Description

This course introduces the debate about the state of democracy in Europe which is crucial to understand changes in today's politics. The course focuses on the most daunting challenges for Europe's democracy. The first part of the course discusses the theoretical foundations and the historical roots of Europe's democracy. The second part focuses on the current challenges including populism, authoritarianism, and technocracy. The last part envisions the future of democracy in Europe.

Course Description

This course provides a historical and political introduction to modern Afghanistan. While it covers a historical timeline spanning from the late 19th century through 2021, it does not provide an exhaustive historical catalogue of events, but rather a genealogy of the political processes and factors that are pertinent to the evaluation of the processes of state-building and nation-building in Afghanistan through today. Covering the country's modern political history from its genesis during The Great Game and the birth of Afghan nationalism in the early 20th century, up to the occupations by the USSR and United States and their political consequences, the course attempts to identify the most salient patterns and trends about the country's political elites and institutions, as well as the interventions of foreign powers, all of which have affected the transformations of the state in Afghanistan.

Course Description

This general sociology course systematically integrates gender studies to revisit the important questions of this discipline. The course examines themes of family, school, work, politics, health, and sexuality through the lens of gender while integrating a certain number of fundamental theories. It discusses gender sociology texts based on concepts examined during the lectures, considers the relationship between public policies and contemporary debates, and develops axes on which to read the social world through the prism of gender: paying attention to gender inequalities in their different constructions and how gender is integrated into different categories of thought.

Course Description
The objective of this course is to initiate the understanding of the methods and models of optimization. The first part of the course concerns convex optimizations, specifically conditions of optimality, the algorithm of the gradient, and its variants. The second part of the course concerns linear programming in the real and natural numbers. The emphasis is put on modeling. Topics include: modeling, the formalization of concrete problems in the form of mathematical optimization; optimization without constraints (analytic resolution, dichotomy, variants of the gradient); optimization with constraints (conditions of optimality, linear programming, linear programming with whole numbers).

Course Description
This course examines, on the one hand, the notions of artist and object of art and, on the other hand, the question of the meaning of art, by appealing to other disciplines of the human sciences such as anthropology, hermeneutics, psychology, semiology, and sociology. To do this, the different disciplines are not presented theoretically, but in an application to objects and issues in the history of art. Topics include: the artwork as a sign, the qualification of the object in the other fields, the notion of artist as proposed by the sociologist or the psychologist. The aim is to introduce students to the approaches proposed by these disciplines and to show them the contribution they can make to a better approach to the questions of meaning and definition of the objects being studied.

Course Description
This course introduces the theories, concepts, and models of public policy analysis. Highlighting the importance of public policies in shaping relationships between the government and the governed, it helps students to unpack the complexity of the policy process, that is how public problems emerge and public policies are developed in order to address them. Insofar as public policies are considered a critical dimension of governmental activities, this requires going beyond the mere study of their substance: while interesting in its own right, it only provides a limited understanding of the contradictions inherent to public policy-making and of the changing nature of the policy process over time and across different political and institutional contexts. By contrast, shifting the focus on how the public policy process works contributes to the opening of the “Black Box” of public policy making and going beyond a managerial and functionalist approach to the policy process. In order to do so, the course guides students through the various stages of the policy process, including problem framing, agenda-setting, decision-making, policy implementation, and evaluation. It also assesses the way various actors, interests, and institutions shape the policy process and in return, the extent to which public policies account for economic, social, and political changes. Finally, it also discusses the international and multilevel dimensions of public policymaking, as well as its complex interplay with other forms of regulation (e.g., market, networks). This is done by drawing on a large range of examples across policy domains (e.g., environment, transport, health, education, etc.). In keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of policy studies, the course draws on authors, concepts, and models drawn from political science, law, sociology, and economics.

This course focuses on contemporary art and architecture. Students examine the historical and cultural background of the contemporary art movement in the United States in the 1960s and discuss artworks and artists from this period as well. The course examines the relationships between visual arts, historicity, and issues both at the aesthetic as well as the socio-political level in order to revisit a history of contemporary art of the 20th century structured according to a succession of movements. It observes the distinctions that exist between West Coast art and East Coast art in the United States.

Course Description
This course examines the role of the intellectuals as well as the shift from a historicity regime which was in place during this period, followed by the growing disillusionment when faced with the repeated tragedies of history. It also revisits the important era of master thinker in the 1960s: Jean-Paul Sartre, Raymond Aron, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, Louis Althusser, Roland Barthes. Prerequisite for this course is a knowledge of the political history of France from post-World War II to 1968, or the Fourth Republic and the beginning of the Fifth Republic.
